I have a stock 8" rear with real tall gears, forgot exactly what they are 2:80's?? anyway I installed a 92 5.0 w/AOD and the dang thing doesn't hit OD till like 70mph? Obviously I need more like 3:55's..question I have is... has anyone retro fitted a late model '87-93 8.8 rear into a 66 ? obvious things would be welding on the spring perches etc...Figure I can find a nice 8.8 w/3:55's for the price of just a posi chunk. Plus it sounds to me like the rear end I now have needs a rebuild of the axel bearings etc..

As you say, you need to cut off/reweld the spring perches and line it all up. Also, stock 87-93 rears are 4-lug axles.....and your wheel backspacing could be an issue. Check it out....

I got a 3rd member with 3:55's off Ebay last year for $500.00 delivered. Bolted up in a couple of hours. One of the best improvements made so far. The stock 2:79's were CRAP.

you can also get new gears from currie enterprises for the 8" rear, as well as from national drivetrain and others. before you swap to an 8.8, with the expense, and time of changing suspension brackets, and swapping axles, check these places out first.

This place is listed as having a locking axle assy for your 66. Call them for the pricing if you're interested. Lots easier than trying to swap a late model.
