66 steering wheel removal

Guys, sorry for this post but this thing is kicking my butt. I've been outside in the Houston heat and humidity for the last 2 hours trying to get this wheel off. It's the deep dish simulated wood wheel with the three horn buttons on the spokes. I've got the nut off but where do I attach the puller? I've already bent the thin steel plate immediately underneath the nut. HELP!!!!!!!!

What type of puller are you trying to use????

A steering wheel puller or a harmonic balancer puller work well.

There are 2 threaded holes on either side of the centershaft of the steering wheel. You are supposed to thread bolts into them and tighten the puller bolt agains the centershaft to remove the wheel.

Dennis, thanks for quick reply. I was back with the car. I was not using correct puller. Hadn't noticed holes. Do you have any idea what thread they are? I've tried several sizes but to no avail. I suspect the threads are messed up so if I can find out what they are I'll chase them. Thanks.

Heres a quick way to do it without the puller, brace you knees up under the steering wheel and put pressure on it at same time, then give it a quick thump underneath with both hands...allways works for me.

They are good ole SAE (not metric). The exact size I am not sure of BUT I believe that they are "fine" threaded.

I've had mixed results using a.van's method, but you could try that too.

Heres a quick way to do it without the puller, brace you knees up under the steering wheel and put pressure on it at same time, then give it a quick thump underneath with both hands...allways works for me.

If you're going to try this method, make sure you spin the retaining nut on a turn or two, to stop the 'wheel smacking you in the face when it pops off.

Unless you want to look like a boxer...
