I started to replace the pinion seal in my mustang and I need to know how to get the defector out of the rear end without damaging it....I have looked all over and it does not look like you can buy new ones and I looked in my shop manual and it does not state how to remove it....

That is the seal ...But ! Unless your gears were set up with a spacer in stead of a crush sleeve behind the yoke you will need to remove the third member and check the gear mesh after replacing the seal because the crush sleeve may crush even more when you tighten the pinion nut . If it has a solid spacer it is no problem ,but if it is an original set up it probably has a crush sleeve . The seal can be removed with a screw driver ,just pop it out .

What we have done before is remove the crush sleeve and take it to a machine shop and have them check it for size and machine a solid spacer .Simply slip the spacer back in place of the crush sleeve and torque the pinion nut when finished .It may not be exact but it is usually close enough . You will see the crush sleeve after you remove the seal .If you do a spacer in stead of a crush sleeve you will not need to remove the third member
