67 wont start and no power

i bought 2 67 coups 6 months ago . one is a parts car the other the project. i just startede working on it last weekend. the thing has been sitting for probley 10 years . so i changed the oil and put a little marvel oil in cylinders.i have fresh gas. etc. i got starter checked and silinoid checked and got new ones. well last weekend the headlights worked windshield wipers worked . so i was getting power. well i reinstalled starter and sillinoid. now i get no power any where and it wont crank over. where should i look to find out why my lights dont even work.

10 years is a long time to sit (was the engine turnin over?), if not my guess is the engine is stuck and the starter can't turn it over on its own. So use the marvels in each cylinder like you have and let it sit for a few days. Then take a ratchet and breaker bar and stick it on the crank pulley bolt and manual turn it over to break it loose. As far as the other electronic woes go, did you get a new battery? Check the alternator if so?

Get a voltmeter ( they are dirt cheap nowdays) check battery voltage. It should be near 12V. Does the solenoid at least click when you attempt to crank? Get jumper cables and use the red clamps only to jump across the two large solenoid terminals to bypass the solenoid and send the battery power directly to the starter. anything?

well the good thing is that the crank does turn by hand .thatis why i am hopefull about the engine . when i do get it started should i crank it over without spark plugs to build up oil pressure? after looking at some wireing diagrams i think i have two wires on the wrong post. but i reassembled it the same way i took it off.i guess maybe that is why it was sitting so long froma simpl previosly mistake. it is raining pretty hard right now in montana so wait till it stops and try that and check my grounds. sorry about my typing skills.:SNSign:

okat so i jumpep across those post and it just sparks badly like it s not good. i checked the two gounds i saw with the starting system the coil and the block . idid see a 68 wireing diagram that looked like the starter was grounded but not on the 67 . is maybe that i got the wrong starter? what else am i missing just to get it to turn over.

When you jumper the solenoid it is going to spark a lot as it takes a lot of current to turn over the motor. You should be able to hear something happening down at the starter though.

Can you post a picture or get a part number of the starter?

If it's the wrong one, it could be binding when installed not allowing it to spin. You could remove it and put the jumper cables to it to test it, but that won't prove it is the right starter.

Once it does crank, leaving the spark plugs out is a good idea to blow out any marvel oil left in there.

Getting it to turn over is pretty much as simple as the diagram.

1. good battery
2. red battery cable to sol
3. red cable from sol to starter
4. black battery ground to engine block
5. make sure it turns over manually
6. jumper the sol

Then worry about getting the solenoid to work, then ignition, then fuel ......

i did the juper cable thing and it turned it over and it even ran for a little bit . next i an going to jiggle the trans misson shifter or put it in neutral to see if it is lock out switch . and am going to put a new ignition switch in. if that does not work what next ? i almost have this thing drive-able. yall's feed back does help thanks guys.

The following diagram will help troubleshoot the solenoid start voltage from the switch. If you can get it to crank from the key by jiggling the shifter around, it might be a bad switch. If it consistantly cranks near park/neutral (reverse or drive), then the park/neutral switch may only need adjustment. The plug to the switch can be bypassed. It should be a red or blue 2 pin connector on the firewall near the accelerator linkage.

My stang was sitting bout 10 years when I got it. For the initial fire up, I had to replace the battery, fuel pump, filter, fuel pickup/sending unit, drain the tank and clean the tar like goo built up in the first 6 inches of the fuel line. Pipe cleaners and carb cleaner worked good. Oh yeah, I dissassembled the carb and cleaned it too.
