You couldn't slap a little paint on that rusty steering shaft by the firewall! come on, all that work, care and attention to detail, you have a engine compartment that would win awards! Tighten up man!

I know, lol! We noticed that when we installed the rack and steering shaft. Didn’t want to mask off half the engine bay to paint it. This was never intended to be a true restoration.

Valve covers and intake are off and painted.

Stripped the old crusty looms off the underhood wiring. Going to re-loom it and hide as much of the wiring as possible. Also going to eliminate the fender mounted solenoid as this car has the mini starter upgrade.

Also installed a new MGW shifter.

Once the engine and engine bay are assembled, we’ll move on to the rear bumper. Need to test fit it so we can weld on the new exhaust tips.

We’re close to being finished will all mechanical work!

Got a lot accomplished the last two weekends.

Wrapped up the cobra steering rack install on my 89.

Centering the rack and steering wheel was very tedious due to the mod motor and long tubes. Each attemp took 30 plus minutes. But I finally got it centered.

Pulled my old carpet out and laid down some sound and heat insulation.

Installed the new carpet. I wasn’t too happy with the fit. Really had to work with it and it’s still not right in a few places. Going to have to trim a lot around the sill plates.

That’s it for my 89. Will install the seat and sill plates at another time.

Now for the 93. Engine bay is back together. All wiring has been re-loomed and the harnesses along each inner fender have been routed outside the engine bay. Also deleted the fender mounted starter solenoid. The owner also added a LMR cold air intake. Hard to beat for $65.

Also mounted the rear bumper, cut off the GT turn downs and welded on some 3” tips.

And finally, the cobra kit is mounted. Got to give to Cervini. The pieces fit pretty well out of the box. Only had to massage a few places.

Next up. We’ll sand the kit while is on the car. Then disassemble and prep to paint the body. I really feel like we’re over the hill now. We’ve finish all the mechanical work and almost all of the paint prep. Mainly waiting for good weather now.

I used a hair dryer and even some spray on upholstery adhesive on the wonky areas. Also made a lot of small cuts to carpet in the door sill areas to sneek up on a good fit. Straight metal shears works better than the razor blade in that area. Did your carpet come with the insulation pads? Mine didn't, I got some from an upholstery shop and used the adhesive to place it where the factory had it.

It does have an insulation backer, just much thinner than the factory carpet.

I’ve thought about adding some insulation around the tunnel. You can really see the difference around the center console. There’s a gap between it and the carpet.

I also planned on trimming a little at a time around the sill plates.

The worst spots are each kick panel and the drivers front seat mount.

Overall I’m happy with it. Just thought ACC carpets were a closer fit out of the box.

I've got dynomat in my ride and you would not believe the difference in floor temp, mine is covered from halfway up the firewall to the tail lights, on the first long drive I pulled out the ashtray and felt the carpet, no heat at all when before it was hot to the touch, I also have long tube headers so I know it works to cut down on the floor heat.

That’s good to know. This setup definitely puts out a lot of heat. On hot days, the AC had trouble keeping up. Hopefully this will help.

I really wish I could get beautiful stainless long tube headers for my '95 like the ones your's has. Mod motors get all the nice exhaust love.

LOL. Thanks. I was sort of forced into buying these due to fit and ground clearance concerns. Only issue was I had to slightly dent the passenger side firewall. They sure did hurt my wallet though.

Back to the dynomat thing, I suggest doing the roof too, I didn't but wish I had even though I have the sunroof option, I'll go limo tint on the sunroof and add the dynomat when I tear it down to fix the exxon valdez style oil leak.

Reached a major milestone yesterday. The cobra kit pieces, fenders and under sides of the hood and hatch are painted.

We grossly underestimated the amount of work required to clean and prep the body kit. Have close to 30 hrs in the last two weekends to reach this point. Although the fitment of the cervini pieces was perfect, the finish was not.

There were a number of places that needed a lot of additional work to get the surface right. Some even needed a second round of primer surfacer.

All in all, I guess that’s par for the course with any body kit. At least I know what to look for when prepping my kit.

Plan for today is to finish prep on the front bumper and top of the hood. If we can finish that, there’s a chance the tops of the hood and hatch and the front bumper will see color today.
