Hello all, I am new to the forum and thinking of purchasing my first mustang. A friend of my grandfathers has a 68 mustang coupe notch back. it has a 3 speed automatic and a 289 V8. rebuilt motor with flat top pistons. I was wondering what type of gas mileage i can expect to get from the car in the city and on the highway. i was told by the mechanic that did the rebuild on the motor that they have been using premium in it as he installed the flat top pistons. the car was fully restored and then put in storage for the last few years. the owner is asking 8000 for it. do you think this is a good deal? what problems should i look for before i purchase? also as far as the gas mileage goes what kind of transmission swaps can i do to get better gas mileage and what would a swap cost me? thanks for the input.

I would post this over in the Classic forums. There are many guys with 60's and 70's Mustangs that can help you. This is the 4.6L forum with 96-04 guys and some 05+ guys.

I agree post this in the Classic threads.

However here's your answer. Only expect about 16.5 hwy and 12-14 on the street. The 2 barrel is just not as efficient unless you run 3.0 or lower gear and a 4100 carb.
A t5 will help a lot but by the time you invest in converting it ....it would take you 3 years of hard driving to save money even at 4.00 a gal..

Now then, 8k is a bit heavy for a coupe! 7 maybe....6 is good anything under 6 is great....IF it looks and drives like it was "just restored and stored" then maybe 8 but she better look great.

If it was recently redone and no rust and runs good, good paint, no dents, restored 8k is a steal!
Rust: floor pans, rear quarters behind the wheels, lower front of both doors, cowl, frame rails.
With the stock gears and a light foot, I could see 16-18 mpg on the highway.
Beaters are running 5k minimum, here in LA, for a running 289 with pinholes in the pans, no dents.
about 2k for a full T5 swap.
Pics would be nice.
If its in that good of shape, offer $7500 with a sad story and see where it gets you.
