68 Pop open gas cap question

Hey there, long time lurker, first time poster...

I have a '68 coupe with the deluxe pop-open gas cap, however under the cover there is no gas cap. As I understand it, there was originally a spring and a gas cap that would press against the filler.

Anyone know where I can get the spring and gas cap? Looking around, it looks like the only thing for sale is the entire assembly. Failing that, is there a small gas cap that I can screw on that will fit under the pop-open cover?

my 68 has on with the original gas cap. The cork seal is long gone though.

On my 67 with pop-open, the spring never sealed that well. I ordered a replacement assembly that came with the new spring attachment separate and a regular cap. I decided not to assemble the spring section and just use the regular cap under the pop-open lid. Now I won't leak gas on hard starts.

Same here. I bought a nice repro pop-open cap off ebay for about 1/3 what the vendors are selling them for and it has a seperate cap or the spring thingie as well.

Anything special about the cap you use under the pop-open cover? It's a waste to spend ~$120 for a simple gas cap as that is all I need.

I have an original (though not to my car) and I have at times had to wire my pop open gas cap shut because it does just that...pop open. This is normally only at the track, but it has happened during regular driving too.

Nothing specail about the cap. There is room if the spring assembly is not on the pop-open.
I've never had my pop-open pop-open accidentally.

Get one of those cheapo twist ons from the local parts store, they're probably only $4.99 in the "fix-it" lineup (the red packages). They're fugly of course but they work, and in your case it will be hidden by the pop-open factory unit.
