I drove my 69 Mustang coupe with strait 6 from central New York to OKC when the engine backfired somewhere in Kansas and the engine started stall out when the rpms fell below 2000, when I stopped I would put C4 into neutral to keep engine above 2000 rpms. I'm thinking this could be a distributor issue but not sure. Anyone experience this situation?

its possible that it is a distributor issue. you still have points? if so check them for proper adjustment, and make sure there is no transfer of material from one point to the other. had that happen a few times before.

next check to make sure the distributor is tight and doesnt move. it could be that the distributor has loosened up and the timing is off.

check the cap for carbon tracking, and the plug wires for leaking voltage.
