6spd in a GT?

This is just a thought, but if I were to blow my stock (manual) trans. would it be possible (or practical cost wise) to put a 6 speed cobra tranny in? I would assume that since their both manual, the only issue would be the cost. Has anybody done this successfully?

FRPP sells a 6 speed exactly for this. I think it's a total bolt in with everything that's needed being included. But it is like $2500 MSRP.

I'd only do it if you have a lot of power. The gear ratios are designed with a more powerful engine in mind (03 Cobra, etc.)

I'd much rather go with a nice new bombproof TKO. :nice:

I was planning auto to T56 swap. But the auto TKO swap is easier and the TKO is way tougher. They just released a new version of the TKO to replace the old one. Two choices of 5th ratio also. www.ddperformance.com can set you up with any of the above.

Mike the owner of stangnet did this swap in his bullet and stangnet has an article about it.

Interesting information.

So when you guys say bullit proof you mean torque and power wise... not shifter proof? I've gone through 2 tr-3650 and I am going through a 3rd one with really minor bolt-ons with my GT. I've been thinking of the T-56 as we all know this TR-3650 is plagued with synchro issues for the 2-3 shift.

What would you guys do? TKO or T-56 for a shifter maniac?

well i plan on having alot of power. over 500 at the wheels when im done i hope. but thats a few years off. I just love the idea of having the six speed in my GT, but will it hold up to that much power, or is the TKO a much better choice? I'm guessing that the TKO is 5spd only?

The T56 is a very tough transmission, the only exception is the 03 Cobra's version uses a 10 spline input shaft. A good (and simple) upgrade is to use a 26 spline input shaft from the Camaro/Firebird version of the T56. With that swap, you'll also need a 26 spline clutch disk.

The TKO is a very strong transmission as well.

But unless you have the power to back it up, a T56 is going to kill your 1/4 mile times because of the gearing. I would go with a TKO.

Wouln't putting 4.10's in the reared fix the gearing low gearing in the t56?
I bet you wouldn't ever use the 6th gear with out 4.10's anyways.
Correct me if I am wrong.

That would just be a start.

The main problem is that the first gear ratio is one 2.97, even for the "wide ratio" version. The close ratio is even worse at 2.66.

By comparison, a TKO's first gear is 3.27 and a T3650's is 3.38.

To get an overall first gear ratio similar to a 5-speed GT with 4.10's using the above mentioned "wide ratio" T56, you would need to use a 4.56 gear. Actually, the math works out to 4.665, but I don't know if there's bigger than 4.56 available for our 8.8" rear ends.

Even to make a T56 have a first gear equal to a stock GT would take a 3.73 gear.

This is a matter of opinion and power. If you have a high HP/Torque car, less 1st gear can actually better because instead of shooting right through the power in that gear, it actually does some work. Thsi is why some cars are faster with 3 speed C4's.

Very few cars actually load the engine in 1st gear at the strip. In reality you might launch better with a 2nd gear launch.

Yeah, I know that the T56 is fine for cars with a lot of muscle. But on stock or bolt-on 2V it's just overkill.

Second gear launches??? Sounds like a car that is really not set up right.

Well like i said before. I am planning on having alot of power at the wheels when im done with the car. Right now i will say 500hp but likely will be more.

I am so totally confused with this gear ration thing between the T56 and the TKO. :bang:

It really all depends on what you are going to be doing with the car. Both Trannies are very strong. You can get a TKO rated at 600lbs of torque and have real good first gear ratios and tear up the track or get a Viper spec t-56 rated at 600lbs of torque and have a completely streetable tranny that can still be beat on at the track.
So for strictly track use I say TKO.... for street use and occasional track use t-56... Just my .02
