Hey all. I have one of each of these axles. I am wondering if there is a difference in the shafts on these from a strength standpoint??

I will be having the 8.8 narrowed, and have not yet opened it up. I am not sure if it has flared shafts or not, so I am wondering if the 7.5's shafts might be usable as a back-up plan...

so if the axle shafts are the same are people telling me my ring gear is gonna shatter because i still have the 7.5 rear in my notch since ive been to lazy switch it out for my 8.8

The axles are the same, it's the diff that's different. I understand it's just physically smaller and can't handle as much power. Keep in mind they used the 7.5's in a lot of cars and they will hold up to some, but the 8.8 is just stronger and more common to use now.

I have seen a 7.5 stand up to a 460 in a fairmont for ~150 passes, thenblew, then ran another ~70 passes before blowing again... sounds like an annomoly which is why I just going to the 8.8 but be nice to have spare axle shafts around....

And on the other hand, Justin popped his 7.5 with his V-6 mustang w/o the spray. I think he was even on street tires at the time.
