I want to upgrade my '72. It has the stock 250 inline six with a 3 speed manual transmission. I don't want to do anything too crazy. Planning on just a stock or mild 302. I do want to upgrade the transmission though. Again, sort of a budget build so it will more than likely be a stock 5 speed. I guess my biggest question is will I need a different driveshaft to do this swap?

Maybe not. Most of the time the stock shaft will fit the T5, if a little tight. At worst, it'll need to be shortened like 1/2".

wow,,,,, i never knew that you could get a wide body with a 6 banger......."The base six cylinder engine had dropped from 145 hp to 99."

are the engine mounts the same for a 302 ?

are you thinking of a t5? if so, you will have to change your clutch linkage

a custom length drive shaft is cheap.....

good luck

That last part is one of the main reasons I want a stock 302. 99hp is pretty pathetic.

Are there any 5-speeds that I wouldn't have to change the linkage for? Would a 4-speed be an easier swap?

My 72 came from the factory with a 302 and a 3spd. You could use the tranny for the time being. I am not sure if you would need a different bell housing and seperator plate.

Was plodding around the bone yard this weekend and I found an '89 F150 (two wheel drive) with a 4 speed manual tranny. Would this be a good fit for my '72? If I did get it, what parts would I need? Obvi the tranny itself. I'm thinking also cross-member, but would I need the driveshaft? Oddly enough, that's my biggest concern with this project simply because I've never had to deal with it before

Um, they changed the way they computed hp in 1972. Numbers got lower, even if the engine didn't change.

The 250 and 302 used the same bellhousing and transmissions. Converting a 71-73 from 6 to 8 is way easier than earlier models.
