I have a 1979 mustang with a rebuilt 302 with 40k on it. My question is what flywheel do I have to use? I been told by a few sources that I need a 157T 28 0z balance flywheel. I just want to know if this is correct or not.
Also I have a ford racing 50 oz flywheel that have 10k it if anyone wants to trade. Also I am doing a t5 swap and I want to know what kind of clutch cable and stuff should I get.
Thanks in advance
Jhery.

yea it is a 157 tooth flywheel for a 302, not exactly sure on the balance weight tho.

If you are doing the T-5 swap u can either go with a junkyard setup (not recommended unless u have done this before and know EXACTLY every piece that u need for the swap). Or, you can buy the parts from stangparts.com. They have a kit with everything u need including the trans, or u can buy the pieces individually off the site.

I would use a ford motorsport SVO quadrant or steeda. I have the SVO and it has worked great for years. Just make sure u get the adjustable cable to come with it. DONT BUY A NON ADJUSTABLE CABLE.

you have piqued my interest - why do you recommend not using a stock (non adjustable) cable? most people recommend it the other way around (and use a FWA for adjustments).

because without an adjustable cable, if u have an aftermarket quadrant (metal not plastic self adjusting) there is no other way to adjust it besides an FWA which is harder to adjust i think than getting under the car and playing with the adjuster nuts.

... personal preference i guess, but I use the FWA as a starting mark for my cable and usually set it all the way closed so if I have an emergency or stretched cable i can use that to get me home. (happened in the past)

Both my 79 Capri 5.0 and my 80 Capri 255 cars came stock with 164 tooth flexplates and C4 transmissions. The 5.0 Capri has 28 oz balance. I think the 255 does also, but I am not certain. The 255 trans, bellhousing, and converter bolted to both the 255 and a 28 oz 78 302 crank.

who put that motor in it, you or the previous owner, if so, you better check to see if somebody didn't replace it with a 50oz. crank, flywheel and balancer. check the part number on the flexplate and that may give you the balance of it, just to be safe you know. you need a 28oz if it is an 81 and down crank crank, flexplate and balancer.

It's the 28oz but I can't remember the tooth count. My motor is set up for the 28oz but I used a 50oz from a 93. Tooth count was the same. I took it to a machine shop and they did there thing and got it to 28oz. Been that way for about a year now and no probs for me. Just my 2 cents.

k, I was replying to the post starter myself that if he has the 50oz flywheel it can be used unless he is wanting to trade it for some other reason.

the only way he can use it is to do what you did and have it rebalanced to 28 oz. or it will screw the bearing up in the motor.
