I bought a Carter mechanical fuel pump that mounts up right where the stock unit was. It is an OEM replacement. It has the rod on the back like the stock unit. I took the old pump off, removed the old fuel line, and cleaned the sludge out of the area behind the pump. I scraped all the gasket material off the block, applied gasket sealer to both sides of the new gasket, and slipped the rod into the hole in the block. I tilted the rod up to get it over any obstacles, and only needed to press with a little bit of force to get the pump flush with the block. I assume that this is ok, and that the "eccentric" on the cam had the pump arm up a bit? I put oil on the bolts and re-installed them, tightening the bolts by hand and then with a 1/4" ratchet to be sure that I felt any binding. It went together smoothly. Does this sound normal? My uncle mentioned that certain fuel pumps have a rod in the block that you have to re-align with a screwdriver or something, but I thought the Ford units just rested on the cam. Thanks for any ideas, I just want to be sure before I re-install the motor.

Sweet, my uncle had me all worried about some sort of pin that may have fallen out. Of course, he is a Chevy guy. (Boo, hiss)
