79-90 GT with 17" rims... Help.

I had to flip the quads, flowmaster catback tail pipes rubbed unless I crimped them which they ended up being cut off, and that was it. I ran 245/45R17 up front, and they rubbed a little at full lock, but swapped to 255/40R17 and they fit much better on the rim and don't rub, even lowered. 275/40R17's are good out back also.

17x9's with 275/40's for the rear and 17x8's with 235/45 in the front. I had to roll the fenders because they where cutting into my tires in the back. Also the front rubs on sharp (and very fast) turns but doesn't damage the tires. My shocks and struts are pretty old and worn. Once I replace the shocks and get coil overs for the front it should help with the rubbing issues. Click the link in my sig for pictures.

SKYWALKR,

I'm running 17x9 Cobra Rs on my 90GT with 275/40R17 Nitto DR on back and 235/45ZR17 up front. The front rims rubbed near full lock so had to put and additional spacer on each side of the rack. For the rear I removed the quads and went with MM lower and FMS upper control arms. No rubbing issues now.

PM me and I'll send pics. Fitment was good with 245x45x17, but I had to use a special center cap with the wheels I chose. (The wheels were concave in the middle and the hub stuck out too far on the front wheels. This is not an issue with the Cobra knockoffs) I also had to notch about an 1/8 of an inch out of the control arms to keep the tire from rubbing at full lock.

Cheers

When you said you flipped the quads, how did they fit with the 275's?
I tried to flip mine and they hit the rear shocks. I'd like to leave them on but
I really want the 275's on the rear. Is it possible and am I just missing something?

My mechanic told me the quads didn't do anything and just junk'd them. Probably why I have such bad launching issues now but I have no rubbing issues. Should have LCA's and other suspension fixes soon enough so it won't be an issue.

I have 17x9's all around and its just like 90mustangGT says, rubs at full lock. Otherwise no real issues and I've had rims for nearly 4 years now. BTW 90mustanggt I think are cars will pretty much be clones except for paint, as everytime you make a post about upgrades I have the same stuff on order. We'll have to compare finished products.

17x9 cobras 255/40 , 275/40 no tailpipes, flipped quads and 1/4" spacers on all four.

I need to get a picture from the back to show the tire width, but here's the best pic I have for this...The wheels look much wider in the back on a LX (no ground effects). I had them on my old 89 lx 5.0 hatchback...and they looked beefy from behind. I wish I could get 17x10" in the back with no other mods that would be awsome :flag:

I'm running 17x9 cobra r's all the way around on my 86 GT.I have Nitto 275/40 drag radials out back and Nitto 245/45 in front.I had to use 1/4in. spacers in front because the wheel was like a 1/16in from hitting the struts.

On my 90 I have 17x8's in front with 255/40x17's and the fit and look are perfect. No rubbing issues at all. The backs are 17x9 with the same size tires as the front and again there are no issues and I didnt have to flip the quads or roll the lips. I will eventually go to a 275 in back when I wear these out because I think it would look a little better. The car is lowered with Eibach pro-kit springs and Im running dumps so I cant comment on tailpipe clearance.
