I've read in here that the 86 SVO intake and Turbo coupe intakes are better than the 84 SVO intake. Is this the same intake as the NA cars have from 87 up, or is it just the turbo cars?

TIA

The '84 cars had a different layout for the intake system. They had 4 runners in a row. This design was not all that great, and allowed no room for creativity, or porting. Anything after '84 switched to the much more efficient "4 square" intake which im sure we are all familiar with. They allow gutting of the upper and knifing the lower to give a shorter intake runner if the driver prefferes high end power rather than low end. The turbo cars use the same basic intake as the N/A cars...

There are a couple different versions of the same "4 square" intake which i have seen in my many trips to the local JY. But, there are no big differences between them. One is a little smoother, and easier to port if you ask me. The other looks better on the outside, with the casting "2.3L EFI."

So a regular, non turbo intake is the same as the 86 SVO and turbo coupe intakes?

for all intensive purposes, yes. there are some cosmetic differences, but thats about it.

I have a full '86 SVO intake on my car, and it looks identical to many of the ones i see in the JY.

That is not 100% true. I have a 1986 merkur and a 1993 LX upper. while both are post inline and they are both 4 packs I think that there are differences in them I know that the knock sensor is in a different location and it has a different shape to the ports. I think that it is a useable for the application but I cant help to remember another differenct that made me think of not using it. I will look under the hood this weekend and see WTF I am talking about it is 5.52 am and im tired.

I looked at my upper intake on my 93 N/A and it is a retarded looking A it does not even resemble a upper from a Turbo car. I would just look for a Turbo intake it is not that much money. Don't go half way on the intake do it right.

That's because it's the DP motor. I believe the '87-'90 intakes were the same as the turbo ones.
