i just bought an 85 to swap to use for 5 speed swap to my 86. The guy i bought it from said it needed a new starter solenoid so i changed it, hooking it up exactly the same as the old one. As i go to connect the battery again the solenoid starts to smoke and spark bad. could the old one have been hooked up wrong or what is there another problem? please help i need to move this car asap before it gets towed, i hope i dont have to get a car dolly.

One of the wires is probably grounded to the solenoid. I'd get a meter out and test for continuity to the chassis.

Also, a 1985 might not be ideal for a 5-spd swap. A few changes were made between 85 and 86. The plugs on the wiring have different heads, single hump crossmember, 10" clutch, smaller bellhousing, possible non-WC t-5. An 1986-later would be a better doner. You may have clearance issues with the bellhousing trying to run a 10.5" clutch. But it's hard to not use what you have when you have the car in hand
