85 serpentine belt

removed a\c of my 85 stang and got a belt for a\c delete. problem is the belts rub together on the water pump and the belt barely fits on the pulleys as it is so I can't get a shorter belt. I still have smog pump on it and tensioner when tight presses belts together the belt diagram says it should work but it doesn't whats the problem

You said you removed the A/C compressor but didn't say anything about moving the power steering pump to where A/C compressor was. Did you do that or no?

Either 1) your power steering is in the stock (meaning stock with A/C) location, or 2) your belt routing is off.
