87 t5 problems. tailshaft spins motor when in neutral

hello. my t5 is stuck in gear. i put it on my new motor yesterday and put it in neutral, and turned the tailshaft and the whole motor turned. i was told the input shaft is only connected to the tail shaft by 4th gear. is it possible that 4th gear is stuck. i have not used the tranny in over a year. got a little moisture in it. and the shift rod that moves the forks came out of place and it won't slide all the way in.i did get it pushed all the way back in but it came back out.my question about this is, is there a certain position that the tab on that shift rod goes in order to operate the shift forks right. i do not want to put the tranny together and it still not shift right after i got the thing unfrozen. i need this help as soon as possible. and is there a website where i can get some diagrams of the forks and gears. thanks.

The shift rod tab does have a specific position that it needs to be in for the tranny to shift properly. Is the shift rod you are talking about the one that the shifter knob goes down into? About 4 inches longs or so or is it the ones that the shift forks are bolted too? If it's the 4 inch one then try pulling it out and putting it in reverse of what you have it now. I had to do that on my Jeeps tranny after I put it in wrong. I had 1st, 3rd, and reverse. If the shift rod is really in neutral then it should be sitting in the middle of 3 shift rod/fork assemblies in the tranny. I'm not sure if you can see down that far in the T-5. All of the rod/fork assemblies should be lined up top to bottom. If you have any other questions on this let me know.

i am talking about the rod with the shift forks. you have to spin it and wiggle it somehow to get it all the way in. this is very complicated

well i figured out the shift fork dilema but still need lots of help on the cause of the tailshaft spinning the motor over with the shifter in neutral.

well for the sake of what if's, it really could be stuck in any gear. it sounds to me as if you've got the tranny torn apart no? if not i would definitely rip it open and see whatcha can find

you will see two big metal rings that have slots in teh middle of them, you can tell that's where the shift forks slide into when the cover is installed. the one with horizontal cut teeth in it is the 1-2 slider and the one with no teeth at all is the 3-4 slider. hope this helps

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://cartapes.com also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

i got the shafts to turn free of each other so that is good. but now i can't find 3rd using the shifter. i guess something else may be a little siezed
