9" Rearend Question

Any problems with installing 31-spline axles in a small bearing rearend housing? I understand that the 31-spline axles only were installed using the large bearings. What problems could arise if any? Thanks.

They'll fit, 35s or 40s are too fat though. No problems other than the additional weight and parasitic loss.

I guess it is a stupid question to ask if pre-mature bearing failure is possible? What can I expect? Anyone running the small bearings and 31-splines?

I'm running 31 spline axles with 9 inch small bearing ends in an 8.8 rear, no problems so far other than adapting my brake backing plates to the housing. Then again the bearing ends are the super small ( smaller than the small 9's ) Stang/ Ranger 7.5/ 8.8 brake pattern.

All the BOSS and CJ Mustangs, Cougars, Fairlanes, and Torinos came stock with 31 spline axles in small bearing housings.
