Me and my friend decided to go down to my Dad's new development tonight and "race." He has a 03 V6 with a Pro 5.0 and a cat-back, while I have 1 5/8" BBK Unequal Headers and a 2.5" Mac O/R H-Pipe. Where we started there was all sand and it was a little up hill so I spun through all of 1st and 2nd, no idea how he did. Once I got traction in 3rd though every time I pulled on him without fail, but it was always extremely close and I know it shouldn't be. I am blaming it on my ****ty driving and launching, but I have two questions. Should it have been that close if he was only spinning through 1st and me 1st+2nd? And at about what RPM do you launch at? I ended up shifting at like 4,000 in 1st because I had no traction.

Thanks! Im gonna go read up more on how to launch so ill be prepared for the track.

4-5k are you kidding me? How don't you spin?

Also I was shifting at low 5,000 because i read you hit a "wall" at like 5,200.

Yeah...launch at 4000rpm on the sand that will get you far.

If your car has normal street tires than basically just leave off idle and progressively push the gas. If the tires are spinning, your not going anywhere.

Yea normal tires on this baby, I was going to try leaving off idle but it seemed waaaaay to logical to try.

EDIT: Yea I don't look but the first week I had the car I memorized what sound went with what RPM so I'm guessing about 5,200RPM. Slicks would help for sure.

Just shift at 5200 rpm, its about where the stock car makes peak power. If you shift too high it will just slow you down.

The stock tach can't be trusted. My stock tach told me I was shifting at 6000 rpm, and it went to 6800 rpm before the rev-limiter kicked in. Obviously, the stock rev-limiter was set at 6250rpm. I didn't know it at the time, but I was really shifting at around 5400 rpm, which works out to be just about right.

Keep launching harder and harder until you find out where you can launch without spinning consistently. With Radial T/A's on 15" rims on a stock 5.0, the sweet spot was right around 3k rpm slipping the clutch.

Anyway,

Good luck. No '03 V6 should be even close. I had similar races with a buddy of mine, who took beating after beating until he finally came to the realization that his 200hp V6 wasn't a match for a stock 5.0.

There is like a 30-40 horsepower difference between a stock 5.0 and a 200hp v-6.. it should be a close race as long as the v-6 driver can launch and bang through the gears.

I don't underestimate the V6's. I have both a 5.0 and an '04 V6. For a V6, it's not too shabby.

I'll tell you what. Go to tire rack and look the up. Man I worked two years at a tire shop. Never mind. It's not worth it. You just keep on calling them slicks.

I know the feeling. I have Traction T/A’s on my DD, and I had to get new ones yesterday. I could hardly drive it in the rain.
