Hey folks. I have a '91 notch that is now giving me some trouble.
The other day the car died on me while driving. It just shut off. When I turned the key, it just cranked and cranked. I could hear the fuel pump cycle on like normal, so I figured it was just a battery connection issue. I popped the hood, checked the wires at the battery and solenoid by wiggling them around, jumped back in and it fired up. Get going down the road and it did it again, repeat, again, repeat. Made it back home. So I made sure all of the connections were solid, good grounds, etc. Went for a drive with no issues, then it did it again out of nowhere.
So I said to hell with it, I'm going to disconnect everything and make sure all of the wires are in good shape, and get everything 100%. I have a 6AL box mounted off the shock tower, next to an Optima red top battery, and an MSD coil on the shock tower next to the solenoid. I decided to install an MSD 2-Step and Maradyne electric fan relay/temp switch kit while I was in there.
I unbolted everything, and pulled it all out of the way. Tucked away any unused connectors and wiring bundles that were previously just laying under the battery tray. I rerouted some of the wires inside the fender, shortened a few that were too long. Crimped and heat shrinked all the connections and terminals, added the MSD 2-Step and Fan Relay Kit, and ran everything through some wire loom. Now everything looks good, I'm feeling confident in the execution of the wiring cleanup and install.
While inside the car to install the manual fan and 2-step switches, I turn the key on to find a hot wire under the dash and notice that the turn signal indicators are lit solid, the backlight for my Autometer tachometer and back lights for the Oil/Water/Volt gauges are lit. Hmm, what the ? So I hit the headlight switch to make sure I didn't bump it. Now the OEM oil pressure gauge starts rising fast, what the ??? So turn off the headlight switch, cycle the key on, the fuel pump comes on for a split second, tach shift light flashes, and the signal indicators are on solid and autometer gauge lights are on again. I try to start the car, it cranks normal and lights off, idles for a second, but immediately dies. The fuel pump relay is clicking like normal.
So I start wiggling around wires under the column, and the ignition switch is practically hanging on for dear life. I unbolt it and it falls apart in my hand. So I run to the parts store and grab a new switch thinking this is the culprit to all of these problems. Install it, same damn thing. Same symptoms, same results.
What in the hell did I do wrong?
