Ford is PISSING ME OFF. They installed this same POS circuit on my car last month. The car then ran hot, and had the same symptoms as those ubove. They wouldn't fix the problem when I took it back, and treated me like CRAP. I unplugged the circuit, and it was fine....


UNTILL this morning on my way to class. Smoke was coming out from my hood. Sure enough, the fan motor was smoking, and it smelled like an electrical fire. I pulled into a chevron, and dumped water on the fan motor, and it was so hot, the first shot of water BUBBLED AND BURNT OFF. It was like throwing water in a hot pan on the stove. Sizzeled away. I dumped more cold water on it, and drove it to school.

Do you have to completly remove the fan assembly to replace the motor, or can you just take off those couple bolts on the front of the motor, and put a new fan motor on that way?

whoa lol i was wondering why i never got a recall then i seen when this was posted lol.... maybe the owner before me had it done..? i never seem to hear the fan running or see it running ever.....hummmi need to let it heat up and open the hood lol

Did the same went to the dealer overheated on the way home pulled the car in the garage found the ground connector wasnt making a good connection took off fords stuff wired in a relay and put my own 50 amp fuse in with a switch wired the fan on high speed and I dont have any problems for over a year in 100 degree heat with the a/c on car doesnt go over 180

I just replaced the fan with an autozone one. I wont let it go to the dealer after reading this thread. With my luck, it would catch fire and then i'd get screwed by the insurance.

I haven't received a recall notice and I don't have the fix on my car.

Sounds like the fix is tripping and killing power to the fan. Then resets when you turn off the car and works again until it trips. I'm curious if there is actually power before the "fix" and it's just not getting to the fan.

after the FIX my high speed fan would never come on. This was a problem that made it difficult to get to work all summer.

I removed the relay and have my fan wired to a switch and a good relay. That and a summit aluminum radiator keeps me at 180 degres, usually 175

I thought about getting this done on my car until I read this post way back when. I've never had an issue with my fan which is now.....what.....about 13 years old. Decided not to fix what wasn't broke.

Bad thing about Ford dealers and our cars is that nothing is covered on our cars due to the excessive age. If something goes wrong during a fix, they can always blame the age on our cars. Thank God for local Mustang shops!

Never received that... do they go via the Government to "track" all the 95 GT owners ?

Good call there!

You guys got me freaking out now, yesterday on the way home from work I was smelling that electrical fire smell, but no smoke coming from my hood.

Could we cut that circuit and install some kind of breaker or fuse ourselves? Or just install a smaller aperage fuse for the fan?

Yeah, you better not go back to that dealership. I suggest that you chek out other dealers---expert, professional, and trusted.

Just because the motor seizes doesn't necessarily mean your going to get a fire. Be cautious and aware, but you don't have to completely freak out. I had mine start seizing up but nothing near it catching fire. One sign of a problem will be excessive heat problems. My car got very hot and I couldn't figure out why. When the car was off I tried moving the fan and I could tell it was binding up. It's something that would be good to check if your having cooling issues or smelling something burning.

after reading all the posts in this thread i have a question.

what does this relay do? i've been reading it completely disables the highspeed fan and others are saying it will just trip if the high speed draws to much power.

i had the relay installed on my car from the previous owner but i broke it about 4 years ago and never reinstalled it.

what should i do. replace it or leave it off?

Just so you guys know, you guys jinxed me.

I'm taking my engine bay apart getting ready for the engine swap. I had a helluva time unplugging the fan. Finally got it, the bottom blade connection is melted/burnt inside the plug.

I hooked a temp connection straight from the fan to the battery. It ran on both blades, but I couldn't tell a big difference in the speed.

Perhaps I finally found why my car wouldn't keep very cool, even after a new high-flo water pump, new radiator, new t-stat, new coolant, water wetter, etc.

Now what? Scrap the fan for a new one.... rewire the whole thing?

Dan, if you're talkin about the circuit breaker, It's your call. The safe answer (regarding a fire) is to run with the CB. Really keep an eye on coolant temps though.

Paul, there should be a noted difference in the fan speed between low and high. If you only have one speed on at a time turned on and there's not a big difference, I might consider swapping the fan or fan motor.

I matched the ground with the black wire in the plug. Upper blade, then individually put power to the other blades. Middle and lower. I'll test it again.

So would you just replace the fan? Or change the wiring too??

What's the difference between our fans and the 3.8L? Some of the ads on ebay say "3.8L ONLY!! "

The 3.8 is reportely only one speed (even though it can have 3 prongs). I have NOT confirmed this however.

Paul, you can get a new fan plug if you desire. Using your own connectors (when properly done, as you would Paul) would work about as well IMHO (it's how mine is, for whatever that's worth).

Do you happen to have a part number on the plug? I may just put a new motor in, and solder in a new plug wire.

Okay, dug into this deeper at the local Ford dealership.

I had them run my VIN number. My car shows NO RECALLS LISTED. So much for trying to get them to give me free parts. LOL

The pigtail is freakin' $32. Guess I'll be going to the salvage yard. He said the pigtail would be the same from 94-97 on both V-8s and V-6 mustangs.

Oh, and I asked the guy at Ford if the V-6 fan was indeed different from the V-8. He said yes, the fan speed is different.
