it can get be difficult to remove.
your gonna have to wrestle it out.
yes the starter has to be removed.
you can try using a pry bar, just dont damage the mating surfaces.
and dont drop it on yourself.

If you are taking the trans out to do the clutch you need to take the bellhousing off also. Just take the trans and bellhousing out as a unit(If you can get the car high enough!). There are 6 bolts for the bellhousing to block. 2 at the top and 2 on each side. Plus you need to remove the starter (2 bolts) and the 2 engine block plate bolts at the bottom ( if they are still there). I am not sure why the Haynes manual would say 5. The 289 was a 5 bolt block at first but that was changed in 65 (I believe) and the 289/302/351 have been 6 bolt blocks ever since. There are only 4 bolts holding the trans to the bellhousing (2 on each side) . I attached a photo that shows the location of the 6 bolts for the bell housing.

Thanks, yea were trying to get the bellhousing off and couldnt get it to drop. We actually found the 2 on top, but cant get to them, we even removied starter before finding bolts on top. Any tips on getting the bolts on top out? There is very little room and cant even get socket on the bolts and I was sitting on engine.

While Im at it my clutch is shot, but before it went out completely it was hard for me to put gear unless it was kind of in motion. Would do fine when car was off, you have any ideas about that? Or if new clutch dont fix it maybe a quadrant?

Thanks in advance

You should be able to get the top 2 bolts with a box wrench or open end wrench. Removal of the smog pump crossover tube on the back of the heads may help make it easier to get to the upper bolts. I don't have the crossover tube on my car and you can get to the upper bolts fairly easily and from the side, without have to climb on top of the motor.

I am not an expert on troubleshooting tranny problems, but this could possibly be a clutch cable adjustment issue. Maybe someone who know these things better can chime in?

is the tranny out and just the bell left on?

if its just the bell you need to get off now,
place a piece of wood on a jack,
place the jack under the oil pan towards the front of the engine, and jack it up.
this will tilt the back of the engine down towards the ground.
do it just enough to use a long extension to get to the top bell bolts.

you can also do this with the tranny is still attached to the bell.
if the 4 tranny to bell bolts are removed, put them back in first.
with a jack and block of wood, support the tranny.
remove the tranny crossmember.
lower the jack, but keep it under the tranny
the weight of the tranny will tilt the back of the engine down.
place a jack stand at the front of the engine to keep it in that position when the tranny is removed, otherwise the engine fall back down when the tranny is removed.
remove the bell to engine bolts and carefully remove the tranny/bell.

Just unbolt the tranny from the bellhousing and get it out of they way. It only takes an extra 5 minutes but makes your life so much easier. And speaking for myself, I find it much easier to remove and reinstall the transmission seperate from the bellhousing.

If you need visuals on how to do it look at the link in my sig where it says "5 speed conversion"

+1. Much much easier to pull the transmission and bellhousing out seperately. It's just 4 extra bolts.

These guys are probably right, it probably will be easier to do them separately. I myself did not have a problem taking the whole thing out in one shot, but it sounds like you are catching hell.

That works ok, when you have good tools. I did an 01' GT not long ago with a one piece TR-3650, and it popped out pretty quick. Once you have longtubes, you don't have a choice, it has to come out as two pieces.

the two bolts at the top should not be hard to get to at all. with driveshaft and crossmember, the tranny should hang down low enough to reach the two bolts at the top with a long extension.

Well the weather has been cold and wet here so havent got to work on it since saturday night. I did however get a 10" extension even though we pieced a few together along with a u joint but couldnt really get it on the bolt good enough to break it. From what Ive read and seen pics of after driving yall nutts and lots more research is that I dont think the motor, or trans w/e one needs to be maybe both lol Im new to this, sorry, but is not low enough cause the pics Ive seen is the tail down and the darn bolts on top are looking right at u, but for me they are hidden, should I remove jack from under tranny? Jack the motor up I mean Ive heard so much I dunno which to do

I have read "The MUstang'" thread on this, but since his tranny was an automatic getting took out I think I may be in a lil diff situation. This is my first big job on a car and I hate it so far. I was looking forward to it haha

The Haynes manual has been off and if not for u guys Id be in real bad shape
