mount joy, p.a.
Hey I was wondering if my car is the only 4.6 to be burning oil because it seems very uncommon from what i have searched. Since i bought the car with 36,000 miles on it and changed the cats out.. when the car warms up it puffs smoke out of the tail pipes usually after i pull out from a redlight. I thought valve seals but there is no smoke on a cold start up. A ford mechanic told me might be a stuck ring. The car has 97,000 miles on it now and still uses oil but not an insane amount. Just curious if anyone else has run across this prob or have any ideas of what it might be. Was thinking of putting some oil additive in because at this point till a rebuild what could it hurt. Just tired of having the car cleaned up nice and looking good and puffing smoke out like a piece of ****

That sucks man, I don't have any smoke but I do run low on oil. Not sure why though.

my car loses about a quart every 3k miles too. im pretty sure its not burning it, and i know its not leaking. i even tried using a thicker oil and it still went down. a guy i work with said its normal if you run the car hard, which i do.

I don't have any oil burning issues with mine. Mine blows unused fuel when i am shifting at high rpm but not oil. My front O2 sensors aren't hooked up yet. Mine just turned 120,000 kilometers which i believe is 75,000 miles.

ya i would say mine goes through a little more than a quart every 3000 but when i put the cats back on for inspection you cant see the smoke..only when they are off...I just added some CD-2 which i was doing a little reading about hopefully that will help..but it has been doing it since 40,000 miles

coolant on startup??? no i know its oil..the color smell and so on...i am taking my car in for the intake recall this week or so because mine is cracked and leaks some...but i am positive it is oil..it loads up when i sit still..and it runs crappy untill i get on it and clean it out..the oil just seeps in at idle the most..i dunno

I had my '98 GT for 60K miles, and it burned about 1qt/3K the whole time, maybe a little more. You won't see it because of the cats, but it's there. My vette had the same problem, but Chevy replaced the oil sealing rings to stop it, under warranty. Ford never even fessed up to the problem, let alone tried to solve it. Over the years, I've read lots of posts about oil consumption problems with the 4.6. Ford says "oh, it's within normal limits for it to burn as much as 1 quart in 800 miles" Hey, in my book, if it's burning that much, its ready for the junkyard, normally.
