IF:
  • The radiator is clean
  • The cooling system is holding pressure
  • The cooling fan is running.
  • The T-stat is working
  • The water pump works
  • There's no air trapped inside the cooling jacket.
  • No system leaks.
AND to motor actually overheat heats, THEN rule out:
  • clogged exhaust
  • blown head gasket
  • excessive timing advance (not likely on a stock PCM tune)
  • dragging brakes, low tire pressure, binding bearings.

Did you "burp" the system? Takes a little finesse to get all of the air out of the coolant passages and hoses. If you don't then it causes overheating.

+1. Forgot about how hard it is to burp DOHC motors. Great call.

Only because I've been through it. Once at home and once over the phone when my son was working in Iowa.

The instructions are in the owners manual and online, that plug in the coolant crossover can be a bitch. I got lucky with vise grips.
