I recently got a 97 cobra with 40k miles on it, and I was wondering what is a good first mod to get? I was thinking new exhaust but I want some other opinions

My vote

I am not sue what your budget is like but my vote for good first mods would be exhaust ($400) a shifter ($200) or a cold air intake ($150) If you can only do one now I would do exhaust (cat back) I have had a few different setups and the Magnaflow sounds the best to me (again only an opinion) and gave me some horsepower too.

I have had numerous people tell me to get 4.11 gears. Gears supposedly make a total beast out of the 32v DOHC.

Yes, get at least a 4.10 gear, if not a 4.30...

4.10's are a good street gear, 4.30's are a better strip gear but are still very streetable...

410s, most definitely! I just got my Cobra and it keeps it in the powerband and is torquey pretty much all the time.

well the car is still a daily driver, so maybe i should keep it a little lower, maybe a 3.73 or a 3.90?

I just put 4.10's in my car about a week ago. I am telling you man you will make a huge mistake if you do anything but 4.10's. Biggest bang for the buck.

Just because it is your daily driver doesn't mean you can't get 4:10's. for the cost to have it done, anything less wouldn't be worth it. I have been driving mine daily for the last 10000 miles with my gears, and they are great. but definately exhaust of some kind. I'm still waiting to order a shifter. lowering springs are nice, if not done already. good luck, check back with some specific stuff.

See my sig. I recomend any of the mods I have. Pullies are a cheap 8-12 hp. Intake is always a good choice. Exhaust would be first on my list. Mine wasnt very expensive at all, but still i.m.o is one of the best sounding. You will feel a big difrence with gears. I race my buddy with his stock 3.27s and pull really hard on him. 3.90s arent that popular but sould be about right. I love my 3.73s, but 4.10s are really nice as our motors do best in mid to higher RPMs. If you ever drive a stang with a shifter or suspension it will be hard to live without either on yours. both of these are next on my list.

oh yeah, 2000 rpms puts me right at 60, havent payed much atention to 70 or 80mph. I get about 24-25 mpg on the interstate and 19-21 in town (with a heavy foot).

Correct, flows and Mac o/r H sound incredible on a 4v. There may be others out there that can outflow them, but bottom line is the combo sounds killer

410s at 80mph and ur at 3k rpms. 410s are nothing at all. I cant believe I ever had anything less. dont worry about it, go get 430s if your going to stay n/a.

If you get gears, makes sure you get a new speedo gear to correct the speedometer. Steeda sells them, and they're fairly cheap ($10) and easy to install.

forget about the 4:11's they don't fit our rear ends, I think that is a 9" or something. I too actually get better gas mileage with the gears, exception being long highway trip. roughly 180 miles average on 3/4 tank of gas. city driving. with the 4:10's!!!!!
