Hey all, I am just starting to learn more about mod motors. I have a 5.0 right now but I am considering a 98 cobra in the near future. I am curious if anyone knew what would be needed to allow the engine to see 500+hp (planning on turbo) without breaking. I know new internals would be needed and a transmission but is there anything I am missing? I heard it is very hard to crack a 4.6 block as opposed to a 5.0 at anything higher then 450rwhp.

Also if somone could give me the general price range of upgrading internals (and whatever else is needed concerning the engine) would be helpful.

Thanks

Forged Rods, pistons, a good exhaust and a Novi 2000 or T-Trim.

Do it yourself to upgrade the internalls is going to run you in the $1,200-$1,600 range. Having it built, you're gonna have to at least double that.

I don't know if you've considered this, or if it's an option for you, but the '03 and '04 Cobras come w/forged internals from the factory, plus they are easily upgraded to 500+ HP w/a few of the typical bolt ons.

I had a 1996 Cobra pushing 477 to the rear. No internal work done. All I had was a Vortech v2 sq charger w/aftercooler, bbk long tube headers, dr.gas x- pipe with flows, 65mm tb. I also had a 10lb pulley with an anderson power pipe. Oh, I can't forget about the custom chip burned by Mike Murillo. I can't remember what kind of #'s I was putting out for torque. Either 422 or 452. Never had a problem with the car. I even installed a 2004 t-56 in it.-J.R.

You sure you dont' mean '95 Cobra? A 65mm T/B belongs on a 5.0L OHV, not a 4.6L DOCH.

Nope....all of them do. '99, '01, '03 and '04. But don't let it scare you off. Although not ideal for drag racing, it's far superior to the solid axle in every other respect.

No. BBk makes a 65mm throttle body for supercharged mustang cobras 4.6L. I think it was around $330.00.

Sure it is. I already mentioned the drag racing tidbit. Name me one other area of performance the Solid axle excels over the IRS? Handling....ride comfort....a big "NOPE, not even close" on those two. The weight argument is a very moot point since he'll be pushing it around with 500hp and besides, a little added weight to the back end might not be such a bad thing, to compensate for the weight he'll be tacking onto the front end.

Im still in college, so mods come a little slow but the weight probably wont bother me. I have been set on a turbo for so long, was gonna throw one in my gt vert and then decided that wanted to do it to a hardtop cobra instead. Thanks for the info guys, I definitely will be looking at the 99 and 01 cobra in the next few months.
