Pardon my loss of knowlege but I am about to buy a longblock out of a 99 series Explorer. What am I going to need to make this thing work?

I have heard the heads are different and require special headers. Will the explorer factory headers work? Are these heads aluminum or Iron?

Cam, does it suck real bad or is it comparable to the 5.0HO cam?

there is so much info out there, and I won't retype it all....here it is in short.

1. It has iron gt40p heads. Good head.
2. exhaust manifolds from the explorer won't work.
3. you'll have plug interference issues with stock headers..get the ford racing headers or invest in 90 degree plug wires and a start cussing and swearing
4. That intake doesn't have EGR, so if you have to run smog, that will be a problem. The heads don't have smog bypass in them, but you can pass functional without that.
5. The cam and valve springs suck really really bad. it's a truck cam and valve springs and quit before 5000 rpms. at a minimum swap in your HO mustang cam and valve springs. suggested...tfs 1 cam is a great cam for that engine with the tfs spring kit

You'll need, or at least want the upgraded cam/springs, as noted above. Otherwise, your stock balancer and flywheel/flexplate will bolt right up. I bet some regular shorty headers would work with the P heads, especially since my BBK's appear to come out quite a bit off the head before turning down.

Thanks, and I'm sorry about the newbie mistake of posting something so stupid. I'm so used to calling an explorer and exploder that is what I searched for and didn't find much.

I'll be running the Edelbrock Intake I think, I'm not sure if it comes with the intake on it. Sometimes they come with the intakes and sometimes not. I hope so because then I can sell one of the intakes.

Yes I have to pass Emmisions, but I can probally do it with the stock H-pipe I have.

I want to do longtubes but don't know if that would be good for emmisions, so I might get some shorties then longtubes later.

Because I have to pass emmisions, I might leave the stock cam and all in there just to get it running, and pass emmisisons, then I will pull everything and make a little HP. Because my car is so torn down, all I want is something to get it moving, and get some of the bugs worked out, then it will be time to start putting some twist down the driveshaft.

Thanks.

sell the intake on ebay...they average $150. I'd just buy another explorer intake...get a 96/97 one with the egr passages. they can be had cheap on ebay too. That intake will flow the heads perfectly..no reason to spend a ton on an eddy unit.

Go with the shorty headers, they'll be just fine.

Don't do work twice. GO with a cam and leave it in there. the ford e cam is 50 state legal...you can run that. the tfs 1 cam is similar to the e cam, but better....i've passed california functional emissions with a tfs 1 cam with no problems.
