99 GT, fuel guage sucks, why?

welll, im no expert, but I have a good understanding of the scientific method. there are 3 main possibilities:

either your guage is faulty, the float mechanism on the fuel pump in the tank that reads the fuel tank level is faulty (most likely), or there is a bad connection from the tank reader to the gauge.

You forgot the 4th possibility:

There is a faulty connection inside his brain.

ive had the same prob a couple times with my car.

Not too long ago, i put 5 bucks worth of gas in the car(was in a hurry), and when i got in the car, cranked it up-i noticed the gas gauge went right to the same place it was before i put gas in it. I knew that wasnt right, so i gave it a second, and even started to drive off-still didnt move.

I walked inside, and asked the clerk if shed been having problems with that pump, and she said no-i thought to myself "thats bull****"

So i got in the car, cranked it up, and the needle was higher this time,it was actually where it was supposed to be. This has happened only a couple times though-not every single time.

my fuel guage reads empty and the "low fuel" light comes up, but i have a fuel tank, and every once in a while the needle will point to the right place, what gives?

Now, if we change the word "fuel" to "full," as in the phrase, "but I have a fuel tank," the post makes sense. He would, therefore, be getting a "Low Fuel" warning light with a full tank of gas. Is this what you meant?

Mine would do that if you left the ignition key open.

lol sorry thinking faster than typing, my fuel light comes on but my gas tank is full, as in just got gas, every once in a while it points to where it should, full, but at random times, the light comes on and it reads empty, but recently its been staying on reading correctly, i dont get it, but it worked fine today

This has happened to me two or three times, but usually only when I would do something like turn the lights on, and reset the trip at the same time. Dunno if its just me, but thats all I remember doing special when it happened. It hasnt happened again in a long time.
