Hey guys. There is this guy that do side work for, and his son owns a 99 GT convertible (out of warranty) and he says when you take the thermostat out, there is a visible crack in the intake underneath ther thermostat. Is this one of those "warranty intake" problems that the early 4.6s had?

If so, what exactly is the part that I need to order for him? Just the whole upper intake?

Can anyone help me out?

I haven't seen the car personaly, only his father who i work for showed me on my engine, what his son's problem is. So sorry if I'm not descriptive enough. I'm about to send this same post to Randy over at Modular Depot, but I wanted to know if the whole UPPER INTAKE is the exact part that I need. Thanks guys

If the intake is a Non PI intake (has plastic around the thermostat housing/front of intake is plastic) then it is one of the 'recalled' ones. The first thing for him to do is call a local Ford dealer, talk with Service Manager, and tell them his VIN number so that they can see if he is still within the seven years (from purchase date). If so, I think that he can buy another NPI intake and Ford will refund his money.

I can't remember if a 99 has a PI or NPI ...

Hope that helps some.

..and yeah, you would tell him to order the whole upper intake manifold. There is another company besides Ford that makes one Dorman makes PI intakes and NPI intakes (much cheaper than from Ford stealership) ...

Here's what my NPI looked like (98 GT)

And here's the replacement NPI with the aluminum crossover

In that second picture you mean that is what the "PI" replacement looks like. You said NPI on there twice. And I already ran the vin through ford. My original post says he is OUT of warranty. I'm just wondering if he needs the whole new upper intake, and from what i can gather.....he does.

Also, its a 99 GT so its a PI car.... did the early 4.6 PI cars STILL have NPI intakes on them????

So should I ask him if he has a plastic cross over... and if so, replace the upper intake... or im guessing he needs a new upper intake no matter WHAT the problem is... cause there is a leak under the thermostat

No you don't want the plastic crossover, thats what failed both on your 99 and my 01 gt. our intakes are a one peice kit there is no upper and lower intake. you need a aluminum corssover PI intake manifold..

just tell randy what happend he will know exactly what you need.

No that 2nd picture was still the NPI manifold, it just had the aluminum crossover on it. You can tell by the fact that it's a shallow little bugger. There were some NPI's that came with alum crossovers and you can also replace a leaky plastic one with a newer aluminum crossover'd NPI. I'd just put a PI manifold on though if the NPI cracked being as they'd not only be fixing the leak but gaining some powaaa too.

Thx for correcting me .. I didn't know that.

What I was getting at is, whatever intake manifold he gets, make sure it has the aluminum runner.

Order this, install it, call it a day

http://www.rpmoutlet.com/musv8wgff.htm

But before you order, check to see that this is covered under warranty. Ford lost a class-action lawsuit over this manifold due to the crossover cracking so the warranty coverage was extended to 6-7 years. Yours may make the cut.

If it doesn't, only gonna cost you $180 and an afternoon of your time to fix.

FYI, Ford used the plastic crossover style intake until mid-2001. After that, they used an aluminum crossover intake in the link above. SO that intake is not a performance mod, just a factory mid-01-04 intake.

Thanks for the info but I already know where to get the intake, I wouldn't order it from there. There is always Randy which im sure is cheaper, and I also get a Ford discount throught the BMW dealer that I work for. Plus I said twice the car is NOT under warranty. But thanks anyway

So, you're doing sidework at a BMW dealership on your bosses sons Ford, but you have hookups through your BMW dealership with Ford. Couldn't you just have a Ford mechanic hook you up? e.g. "Hi, I'm Bob, I work next door at blah blah BMW. Fix this intake, bitch."

I wish we had a smiley of a guy blowing his brains out from confusion.

^^^^thats what I bought, except if you pay someone to tap the 2nd coolant hole the price jumps up a little. I only paid someone to do it because I didn't want to crack or ruin it while trying to tap it myself.

Well i work for BMW, but I do sidework on the weekends for my OTHER boss... down at Port Newark in jersey. So its not my BMW boss, my 2nd job boss. And I am having a Ford Tech work on the car...but a different ford tech. Not one from the ford dealer that i get the discount from.
