99 gt port and polish stock heads?

I am new to the world of the 4.6 and curious to see if anyone has any answers to my questions...


i have a 99 gt stock with a steeda tri-ax shifter.

as far as head work goes what would be the best route for head work for the sohc?

and what about an aftermarket intake?

and any and every recomended mod anyone has in mind would be great help.

Modular Powerhouse has the best flowing 2V heads. VT Engines and Fox Lake Racing also have good heads. make sure to get bigger valves and better springs. if you go that route, you might as well get cams while you are at it.

as far as an aftermarket intake, the stock one is actually fairly good. the only option i would look at is the Bullit intake. it's proven time and again. so far, no aftermarket intake has consistantly produced gains on the average street car. plenums on the other hand do produce a gain while not being too expensive. Dragon for F/I and Accufab for N/A.

but for you, i suggest starting out with a full exhaust.

most of your aftermarket componies like Patriot use stock heads and P/P them. if you have the time send them to a reliable shop to get ported and polished. it will be cheaper with the same results.

Stay stock or go Bullit for the intake. most aftermarket there doesnt make that big of gains. throttle body and upper plenum is your best bet in that department.

And if you have a drop in K&N leave it like that, dont worry about CAI for a while, unless you like the look of it.

A tune will be good, even though you are mostly stock. you should see like 15hp there.

Like Fast said, no company makes an aftermarket casting for heads. They all use the OEM head and port it.

I've had good luck with Total Engine Airflow for porting. I ported my own PI heads and used a P-51 intake, but if I had it to do over again I would send the heads to TEA and just get a plenum and Throttle body.

If you are porting the heads, upgrade the cams too. I used Comp XE262AH and would use them again. Headers will give you back some of the low end torque that you will lose with the cams. I used Bassani Mid-Lengths, and would again. They are not bad to install if you have the heads off.

Here are some other things to try:

- A high flow catted X pipe will help quite a bit, but the stock mufflers are fine power-wise.
- Pullies are a good addition
- Get a dyno tune. I prefer the Diablo Predator myself.
- Definitely upgrade the gears. Really, this should be your first step.
