I have a hayes manual for the 99-04 mustangs. according to the manual, there is a hole in the tensioner arm for a 1/2" breaker bar to relieve pressure on the timing belt. the tensioner arm on my cobra does not have this "hole". has anyone run into a tensioner like this? I need to replace my alternator and i cannot until i get this figured out.

My GT has a 3/8" receptacle for a ratchet. I wonder: Is that an OE Ford tensioner or has it been replaced by an aftermarket or "jobber" part?

Are you sure thats not just the idler pulley? I have never studied the accessories on the cobra motors but that looks to me that it may just be an idler pulley not the auto tensioner. If it is in fact the tensioner just use your arm to move it out of the way the tension shouldnt not be that strong on it I have done it that way before when you cant get a ractchet in there.

I looked for pulley diagrams for the 99 cobra motor and every single one that I see shows that at the tensioner but all of them have the slot of a 3/8 ratchet to be able to move the arm. The one on your motor must be aftermarket. That is the only solution I can think of on why it does not have the proper casting as the rest.
yes, that is the tensioner pulley. i was able to get the belt off the alternator by putting the grip end of an 18" breaker bar between the tensioner pulley and the tensioner - i know this may not be the 'correct' way to do this, but it gets it done. i agree with stangman11 that this must be aftermarket or a *** part. as for taking the alternator off the engine, do you have to take off the radiator hose that goes down to the bottom of the radiator? i ask because it looks like the alternator is too big to get out without taking off this hose. i may be wrong, but i want to check before i take it out.
