My girlfriend is looking at a 99 gt convertible automatic with 101,000 miles. what are your opinions about this...I dont know much about 4.6's or even auto's for that matter. It seems like its in really good condition, but what should i watch out for? Also, the auto shifts really firm and chirps the tires shifting into 2nd, is that normal? sorry if that's a stupid question, but ive never owned an auto.
Thanks

Go for it if you like the car. 7900 seems reasonable, but you can always ask about going lower.

what kind of maintenance/problems have you guys with 4.6's had over 100k miles. i dont want to get into something thats gonna cost a ton of money in repairs. the price is very reasonable i think, and im pretty sure he will take 7500, but i dont want to regret buying something with so many miles

I only have 75k miles, but here are a couple things I've noticed.

The idle air control valve went out at around 45k miles. The car would start, but if you let it idle the revs would fall down to 0 and the car would cut off. I had it replaced under warranty, but I think the cost was maybe $125 from Ford.

When the weather is really hot and the car's been running all day. The 6-disc in-dash changer will lock up sometimes. Either when it changes to another disc or when you attempt to insert/eject a disc. Ejecting can sometimes be fixed by placing another disc in the opening and helping the rollers grab onto the stuck disc. Other times I've disconnected the battery to fix the problem.

Also when it's really hot and I've been driving, I've had this happen 3 times. The driver-side window will get stuck in the down position. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with that stupid "automatic down" crap it does, because the passenger side has never had this problem. The first 2 times I had to wait til it had gotten close to nighttime and it went back up no problem. The third time I was impatient, and beat the inner door panel with my fist while I was driving. This worked and I was able to raise the window.

Other than these 3 things it's been a great car. It's taken quite a beating from me and still runs strong.

Also, the auto shifts really firm and chirps the tires shifting into 2nd, is that normal? sorry if that's a stupid question, but ive never owned an auto.
Thanks

It's normal if you have the gas pedal pressed all the way down.

Oh yeah, Is it completely stock? It could perhaps have a shift kit or something.

that's not a stupid question at all. the transmission might have the J-mod done to it (this firms up shifts significantly) or it could have been tuned with a handheld programmer. Just ask the guy you're buying it from, he should be able to tell you exactly what he did.

My 99 has 94k on it and it runs like a champ. That sounds like a pretty good price. I paid 9k for mine in the spring, but it had all the mods i would have done anywhere so in my mind i saved myself some money there. Sounds like your getting a good price and like the others said, this drivetrain is in a lot of service vechicles that get a lot of use and they hold up.

Make sure the top is in good condition, the original top is probably about shot by now unless it has been replaced already.

if its been taken care of you shouldn't need anything but routine maintenance
my 97 has 104xxx and it still runs smooth the only major maintenance has been the intake valve thing cracked and i didn't know about the recall
my lt header install
and my headers get unistalled while i was in bootcamp
but other than that its great i never have a problem with it and its not that i baby it or anything.
its just a solid car and you'll definitly get everything thats its worth to you.
by the way just incase you didn't know your cars intake valve won't crack because its metal not gay and plastic

Just as a reference, I paid 9800 or my 2000 gt with 44k miles on it. It all depends on the location of the price, I have seen many cars with 80+k miles go for 10k+ so all depends. Good luck!

That's one of the major problems with the car, the owner has only had it for a year and put less than two thousand miles on it. he knows absolutely nothing about cars, and has no idea if anything has been done. Everything seems completely stock. Feels really slow, but compared to my ls1 I guess it would, lol. Anything else i should be looking out for?

I just purchased (swapped) my 1998 GT last night!
I have owned it for atotal of 16hrs now and love this thing. Its a convertible. Arrest me Red with Black Leather, Auto but it was my brothers (scary) and he needed my expedition to pull his boat since his f250 took a dookey. Traded straight up.
My Expedition booked for 11,000 here in Ohio with 81,XXX on it. His Mustang had 81,XXX not sure what it booked for but seemed like a good trade to me. I do know the prices here seem a heck of a lot higher than they do there??? Maybe its cause of the miles difference??? IDK

Buy my 98 GT Convertible 5 Speed Manual. Same milage, one year older, and a hell of a lot cheaper.

Def listen for a noisy timing chain. The guides are know to wear out, but usually do under 100k. If it need to be changed its notthat involved as to persuade you not to buy the car, but somthing to listen for.

That looks very nice, how much are you asking? Not sure if I can convince her of getting a 5 speed though!

I've got you all beat! 96 GT with 170,000 miles. Runs like a top and drives like a dream...of course, when I first bought it, the person that had it before had ruined the suspension and drive train...had to replace driveshaft, transmission mount, rear axle, rear upper control arms and bushings, ABS sensors and rings on the rear (stupid f***** cut them off), front lower ball joints, and last but not least, Caster/Camber plates because it had been hit in the front left and not repaired correctly...could never get the alignment correct until I replaced the plates.

Just check it out thoroughly...if it's been taken care of, you'll get miles of enjoyment out of it...I run Mobil 1 full synthetic since I bought mine almost 3 years ago.
