A/C blew up today. 01 bullitt **PIC**

turned on the A/C today.... as soon as i did white smoke poured out from under the hood.

I turned the A/C off and stopped at a gas station. I kept hearing this "hisssssssss" sound. I figured i blew an A/C line

I get home and jack the car up.... it has the bright green gunk sprayed over my two A/C lines.

what could cause this? here is a pic. (green gunk shown with green arrows, yellow arrows show where the possible leak came from)

the green stuff is from the a/c line getten a hole. the green stuff just helps u find the hole.

another question: what do those little plastic clamps on the lines do? it looks like they are around where the ac lines are 'joined'

is this a common problem on a mustang?

i thought i posted this in technical. I guess if its not a question about shorty headers or 3.73 or 4.10 gears no one knows here on ole stangnet......

Oh and BTW, did you ever think about buying a Haynes manual or doing a few searches? You could always try reading the friendly manual

Have you tried turning on the car to pinpoint where the fluid is coming from?

Are you sure you didn't blow a coolent line? Looks like antifreeze to me. Check your lower hose.

I'm no expert but the R132 I've seen with leak detectors is red. Could be other colors but I've never seen it.

The "green gunk" is a/c system dye. It's installed into the a/c system from the factory on later model cars. It's used to pinpoint a leak in the a/c system. You have a very large leak in your a/c system and this is why you are seeing the dye. Usually a/c systems leak slowly and a black light is needed to see the dye, they dye is designed to glow under a black light. From the picture I'd say your bullitt blew the front a/c compressor seal or just blew a line/hose, kinda hard to tell for sure as the dye is everywhere. The hissing you heard when you shut your car off was the a/c refrigerant, r-134a, escaping from the system. To find the leak, get some r-134a and pump it into your a/c system and listen for the leak, a leak of that size should be very easy to find. Or get someone that knows how to do this to do it for you. As far as it being a common problem I would say no, haven't heard of this issue with bullitts or GTs in general. I visit IMBOC.com frequently as I own a bullitt too and I haven't heard of common a/c system failures on this car.

I followed the leak back to one of the joins in the a/c line in the pic. its coming from the "left yellow line"... so i gotta take that one out and replace it... bummer

you just have too wait a minute for tech help.. i have a life as do the other people in here that try too help out. this is a free service too you.. and most on here are amatuer mechanics with no background in a/c work..how are they going too help you with this. i am a ford EEC,elec and A/C specialist. if you want 24 hour on call tech help i will provide that for 100 dollars per tech call .. if you don't want too pay a diag fee wait like everybody else.

i find your comment about the tech help here offensive. if you don't like this site LEAVE.. but since i am a nice guy i will try and help you even if you are rude.

the yellow arrow is pointing too a spring coupling that plastic clamp is a backup saftey lock. remove the plastic clamp then see if the two lines come apart. if they do the spring lock somehow failed. if not a hose broke near the coupling.

was the car in for service recently? any a/c work done?

if not i would reconnect the lines and tug on them see if they come apart. if not bring it too a shop to have it recharged ..

the only cause of this problem is the spring lock failed or was not properly attached after service or from the factory.

like a previous post siad that green gunk is A/C dye mixed with A/C oil . you have nothign in the system now with that leak.

Just a note. The coolant that is put into the A/C is green like that or similar. The compressor does have orings and gaskets in the front. Here are your possibilities since it is hard to tell from the picture. If the green stuff is only on the front of the compressor and it is maybe on one of the A/C lines, then it is possible that your system just lost a o ring or a gasket. If its all over the front of the engine, then it is possible that you just blew a hose. Also, is your A/C blowing cold? If it is, then its not your A/C. If its not blowing cold and your compressor is not turning that means a leak. If the A/C system doesnt have any freon then the compressor will not turn. Good luck.

the green stuff in the picture is a mixture of compressor oil and a/c dye.

the spring lock on that coupling with the yellow arrow probally let go.

that appears too be the connection from the manifold line to the acumulator.

just test the conneections and if they are good then come back for more help.

i'm not a rude person or impatient usually, but I knew if i said something about this forum sucking I would get a "rise" out of someone and they would take the time to respond....

ask yourself if you would have helped me if I didn't leave those smartassed comments.

the line has a leak in it right by that plastic clamp, I gotta use this funky tool like a fuel line disconnect to take it off. I'll probably let someone recharge it though since I have no idea how to do it and its expensive to waste...

I do like stangnet! I actually met the guy with the green bullitt from Auburn, AL #0005 at a car show, and he was a nice guy.
