Please explain what is wrong with the cold air intake. K&N filters pass slot of air but are junk filters and let a lot of pass through. There are much better filters on the market for the same price

Putting aside the brand of air filter, the concern is the filter is in the engine bay sucking in hot air. It would be more ideal if you could either turn the filter so the elbow passes into the fender and filter mounts there, or run a stock air box with a panel filter of your choosing.

As far as I know the inner fenders are still there.I’ll take a closer look Friday when I finally make it home for a night. I grew up on a farm and pretty much every car or truck i have own and a similar set up as this for the CAI. honestly I’m not to worried about. The old carbed 302’s, 351’s and 460’s all had the filter on top of the engine. And we ran them on the farm and in the fields with no problems. Proper care and maintenance of that filter and it will be fine. It’s an AFE cone style filter. I did not install this as it was there when we bought the car. But I do agree that an air box stock or not does keep more dirt out. Without a doubt.

I can assure you, the stock air box keeps more dirt out and the intake temps under the hood are significantly higher without the box, which is bad for horsepower.

Even on my terminator swapped setup i ran a huge open filter for a while (and it wasn't pointed at the ground), it was black and full of crap in a short period of time. Swapped it to covered JLT setup and in more miles driving, it looks like it was pretty much never run.

With the fender well in place, the stock intake pulls air from behind the headlight. Not underneath the car or from the engine bay.

No insult intended, it's your car to do what you like with and i'm aware you didn't do it.
But there is pretty much no situation where an open cone filter in the engine bay is good and i'm not so sure that siting a carb that is 30+ years out of date is the best comparison.

I agree. In stock configuration, with an inner fenderline in place, the fenderwell is protected from dust/grime. The engine bay, especially with the mechanical fan constantly turning, is prone to kicking up more dust and grime.

But, we've gone a bit off topic, and solicited unwanted advice, so don't take it too personally.

I have been running a K&N filter in the 'dump truck' (7.3 turbo) for over 500k miles. If they where junk I think I would have noticed.

It’s a HAI, Hot Air intake, when the conical filter is exposed in the engine bay.

I hope this link shows the BBK Fox fuel injected air intake and filter kits. The 1557 kit was already installed In my car. They sell a MAF replacement section for speed density cars. Even BBK sells the 1556 “cold” air kit that goes in the hot engine bay.
This at least gives you a price point (and cool looks) comparison when looking for stock replacement pieces.

I have to know, are you suggesting that CAI's (C is for cold) are designed like the one you run currently and we are the idiots here?

I took it to mean the engineers of these HAI (not CAI) conical filter holders are as bright as the catalog makers that have eBay listings for an electric radiator fan for air cooled Corvairs and Beetles. They also list V-8 SFI bellhousings that fit these cars.

I took took it sarcasm towards us, considering rarely do we see any reputable CAI company design anything like what is on his car. Couple that with suggesting earlier that carbs do the same.

I’ll be asking a little “is it worth $700”.

I deleted my AC only because it wasn’t working, looked terrible (dry rotted accumulator hose, bent lines, years of caked on oil on the non working compressor, etc.) not because I’m a “hack”. At least I’d like to think I’m not.
In a few years when AC gets to the top of the priority list, we’ll look at getting it back on -until then I’ll enjoy a less cluttered engine bay!

I cant drive my car. Every day is ninety two degrees almost six months of the year. Its got a few good reviews a guy claimed forty deg. out the vent. Im just a little worried about the thing in the dash not getting clean enough. I am ordering that soon last Sunday I almost pulled the trigger. I think over time it should add value.

Time to pull the dash and put in the new! Lol
It seems like a daunting task, but plenty of guys have done it. One (can’t remember who) says he can pull a dash in 30 minutes now.

Im a worry wart. Iworry if I pull the dash I will get noises , creeks ect. Plus I wont pull the dash till winter when its cool. Thats another reason I have not bought it because I need a heater core so why not pull the dash and have a car with heat. Dash doesnt scare me I like that stuff. That way I can clean everything.
