A/C & PS Delete and Belt Needed

I have a 1990 Mustang engine with carburator. If I eliminate the A/C and Power Steering can I run a single belt between the crank, alternator, and water pump pulleys? Someone told me this will not work because the water pump is reverse rotation. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

Done all the time. You want a 70.5" belt.

I think the 70.5" belt only works if you use the A/C delete pulley. Am I wrong? Is the water pump pulley smooth or grooved? If it is smooth how could that work?
