I have a buddy who works at a Lincoln Mercury dealer who also knows a tech that is seasoned when it comes to installing gears. I told him i was interested and my buddy told me the tech would install a set of 3.73's out of a Navigator 8.8 rear end with relatively low miles on the gears. So i figure i would buy a bearing rebuild kit and a clutch pack rebuild kit and give them to him and be done with it. What do you guys think about this? I was a little skeptical, but i dunno. Does this check out?

The gears you buy from Ford Racing i believe are performance specs and heat treated, im not sure about the gata's

I'd replace the traction-lock (Ford) with something a bit stronger, like an Auburn. If you don't want to try their locker, they have a good limited-slip cone-clutch rear end that is far better than the wimpy limited slip in the stock rear end. With good slicks like MT's, the stock traction lock will be doing one-wheel burnouts pretty quickly... the auburn limited slip is a beast...

Lots of people have trouble with Auburn lockers. The 31 spline FRPP Trac-loc differential is very strong, and WAY cheaper than most other aftermarket setups.

I wouldn't put used gears in your diff either. Just buy new gears and have them installed, or buy 31 spline axles/diff.

Count the teeth on the pinion gear and the ring gear to verify that they really are 3.73:1 gears.

Man go talk to Carlton at nationwide transmission on capital circle. He installed my gears about five years ago for $125 and he has done probably 100 mustang gear installs. He will tell you if you need it or not.

Ok i figure i will just get the gears and and do it myself at school with some help, i'm currently in an automotive class at a trade school. Anyway, i was doing some research and figure this is what i needed. Feel free to chime in on what you think.

Sounds like you're good to go, but are you sure you don't want to go with 4.10 gears?

Thanks man, i'm not gettin' 4.10's cause i'm goin with a blower setup in the future and the consensus is that 4.10's aren't as blower friendly as 3.73's are. I think cause you will spin all day with the 4.10's as opposed to the 3.73's.

10-4 Good reason. I've found 4.10 gears to be funner than a barrel of monkeys, but I'm n/a.

It's a rebuild kit, not an actual track-lok. Kit cost me 45 bucks.
