A few ?'s about the maf sensor

i have had my 95 gt for about 3 weeks now. It supposedly has a cam. The idle is a little rough as you would expect and it hangs a bit, not bad. I took the maf sensor out to clean it and it was slightly bent. It was clean as a whistle so i imagine the previous owner cleaned it out shortly before selling it. Is it still ok or do i need a new one? Is there a way to test it? Also the plug that connects to the maf sensor right at the maf there is a wire that goes from one wire to the other, like a "jumper" wire or something. It goes from the outside wires i will go look at the color of the wires. Is it supposed to be like that or what is the purpose of it?

Edit: the wires are red and red/blue stripe. The connectors that are on each wire say 3m so i figure it is not like that from the factory so why would you do it? I noticed that there is electrical tape on one of the other wires and a couple other wires looks like someone sliced the wire so the bare wire is showing so ill tape them up for sure.:nonono:

sounds to me like someone has jumped the maf wires because of a bad resistor wire ... post pictures of jumper wire and maf sensor....

how to test... post results and if its determined the maf is bad i would disconnect jumper before installing new one....

its the stock one. it says ford on it. i will see if i can test it tomorrow, i dont think i have a volt meter but ill see if i can find one. So if it is bad than i need a new maf sensor basically? How much do they run?

Also i took out the act or iac whichever you want to call it and cleaned it and put new 02 sensors in it. I took it for a quick test drive after the new 02 sensors and it ran alright but now it doesnt want to idle. it idles lower than it used to (650 or so i would guess) and it dies if i dont give it gas until it warms up. Did i mess something up or what? or do i just need to raise the idle and how do i do that? I wonder if messing with the maf wires messed something up. I am also wondering if i have a vacuum leak. Someone must have used up my carb cleaner so i couldnt use that to see. It sounds like a vac leak coming from around the tb is this normal? It is not a stock one it is a 65mm and they are 60mm stock i believe correct? I had ran codes on it before it was acting up (after the new o2's and it said something about huego being lean (which means the o2's are supposedly running lean) so i was going to clear the codes and check the codes again. this is my first mustang and it is a lot different working on it than my 79 f 150 so i am still getting used to how it works and not having any space to work on it lol

there are a few vac lines near the TB. it might be a combo of vac leak and something goin on with the MAF

i would check over all your vac lines and if you cant find anything maybe take a can of carb cleaner and spray it around the vac lines and if idle changes you found your leak

ya i plan on spraying carb cleaner on them and seeing if the idle changes. Also i just realized something. I did not mess with the iac, what i took out was the air charge temp sending unit. This is what i was talking about not the iac (i am still learning with all these sensors lol)

Funny how one letter makes a difference. Good call on cleaning the IAT anyhow. I would index it upon installation.

Good luck.

BTW, Bill, nice work. :nice:

ok well i think i found the vacuum leak and it scares the hell out of me lol.(what else the previous owner/ mechanics didnt do right) I was feeling around looking for the vacuum leak and i felt around the egr i believe it is (bolted on the tb and has the tube go down to the headers). Well i thought i could feel a leak or something and i notice that i can push it tighter against the tb. Then i feel around the flange and notice the top bolt is MISSING and the bottom bolt is loose. The gasket is hanging out. Im gonna go search and see if i have a bolt laying around. Ill post back to see if it fixes the problem or not but i am sure it will. i still cant believe that....:nonono: they had a problem with tightening bolts i think. the pro 5.0 shifter bolts on the handle were loose and they even managed to round out one of them so i had to take the vice grips to it.

gasket looks ok. problem is i cant find a bolt. i live on a farm so we have a good selection of bolts. it is a 5/16 bolt i believe but the pitch is 20... i thought the pitch for 5/16 bolts was 18 and 24.... its a cobra intake anyone know what size of bolt i need??? i tried 5/16 bolts but they dont thread in right and 1/4 is too small 7/16 is too big. it has a 4 on the head...

well guess what... it didnt work. 8mmx1.25 isnt the right size. its the size of the one bolt they had in there but it was loose because it isnt the right one. i basically push them in a little and they hold it together a bit but it isnt tight. So i just got them both in there with some spacers half ass holding them in there till i find the right bolt. Anyone know what size they are or anything???? the one that was in it was 8mmx1.25 and it was about 2 inches long or so... maybe they are the next size bigger?? anything would be helpful... that is the problem though as it idles now with it half ass put together even though it isnt anywhere near tight and the gasket has a tear in it. i am going to look online and if no one finds out by tomorrow guess ill run to the parts store and see if they know what size it would be. its a cobra intake (svo motorsports) and a 65 mm tb
