Like you, I have no fear of being sent overseas to fight; I too am 38. Unlike you, I'm not so gung-ho to send our sons & daughters to their deaths. This is not to say I don't support the idea of military force when appropriate; we should be in Afghanistan right now, & I support that action 100%. You talk a big fight (huge, actually) but you know you have no real threat of having to make good on it, which devaules your rants tremendously. Volunteer for service, & I'll call you a hero like every other soldier.

You either have no real argument to stand on, or you're just unable to articulate it, if all you can do is hurl insults at me like a slobbering idiot. Normally, I'd ban you for it, but it's kind of fun to watch. I especially enjoy all the blanket assumptions you make based on me disagreeing with you.

Here's a good one for you. I'm going to make an assumption about you, & say that you hated our previous administration (1992-2000) just as strongly as you love our current one (2000-present). If I am un-American for dissenting now, are you un-American for dissenting then? (Hint: you can't have it both ways.) I can tell you I already know the answer, I already know your reply, & you are wrong. But go ahead, it'll be fun. You might surprise me.

Actually this thread has disintegrated to the point where it really is no longer about the family in the original post.

And that's a shame.

When I originally posted this, it was to share with you all the sacrifice made by a Marine and his family, and the corageous and honorable manner in which his young widow chose to honor the memory of her husband. I did NOT post this with the intent that it turn into yet another politically charged Stangnet thread about whether the war was right or wrong, or with the intent that it become a forum in which to debate the merits of our current administration (it seems that Bush Bashing is a very popular past time for some Stangnet members). If I wasn't so sensitive to the situation addressed in my original posting, perhaps I would find some of the remarks in the subsequent postings more amusing. As it is, I find several of them very disappointing, and a few downright offensive.

I am a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, was in Iraq for the war last year (note my signature), and will probably be going back next year. As a Marine for the last quarter century (I've actually been a Marine for a greater portion of my life than I've been a civilian) I have seen first hand the sacrifices that our Marines (both young and old) and their families make. Some examples: One of the Marines who was killed at An Nasariyah last March 23rd never got to see the twins that his wife gave birth to after he deployed. He was killed while attempting to carry a wounded Marine to safety and was recommended for the Navy Cross as a result of his actions. Another Marine who was killed that day, a Coropral, immigrated to this country from Thailand when he was four years old. His 73 year old grandfather, a retired LtCol in the Royal Thai Air Force, wore his dress white uniform to his grandson's funeral at Arlington.

Several of the families of Marines who were killed during that battle chose to be standing on the beach at Camp Lejeune when the unit returned from Iraq to welcome them home. Think about how difficult that must have been for those families who had just buried their own Marines. Here's their son's/husband's/brother's platoon coming off the landing craft and he's not there. Their loved ones had been killed in March, and here they are on the beach at Lejeune when we returned in June, only 3 months later. The events of that day reaffirmed to me that courage isn't just limited to the battlefield.
These are the kinds of things--the stories of individual honor and sacrifice--stories that you won't see on CNN--that in many ways illustrate what it is to be American. Not the rock throwing and political chest beating that characterizes much of what was in this thread.

The fact is that we're at war, and people are dying. Whether you agree or disagee with our involvement in the war, the administration, the decision to go, etc. is immaterial to me, as this thread was not intended to be a political forum. What is important to me, and should be to EVERY ONE of us, is that we take a moment from time to time, to reflect on and honor the sacrifices our fellow Americans are making during this time of conflict, and say a little prayer for them and those who they left behind.

I reserve my right to freedom of speech. Anyone can have an opinion on anything. Go watch Farenheight 9/11 and talk to me after you see it. In it you will see a marine who says he will go to jail before he goes back to iraq. Or the mother who encouraged her kids to join the army for money for college then her son died in irag and his last letter home talks about nothing but how we shouldnt be there and how much he wanted to come home. So dont talk to me about he knew what he was getting into, no one had any clue, not even Bush.

I did my time in Iraq. It was my choice to join. I support my country and our president. We should all be greatful to live here. I've been lucky enough to meet Iraqi people while serving there, there is no better feeling than knowing you help make a differance for a country. If you don't like our country of Commander and Chief, I would be happy to escort you to some third world country. If call up, I would be ready and willing to serve again.
