Hey guys, well i went to get my car scanned today and these codes popped up: P0430, P0340 and P0316.
i think P0430 has something to do with the fact that i don't have cats but what do the others mean. Right now the car is running like crap, it's real low on power and it bucks and jerks under light throttle and hesitates when i gun it. I've already change the fuel filter, plugs, and oil, what else do i need to do? thanks guys

P0340 - Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
I can't find the P0316.

Hmm if you can get your hands on a Genisis scanner you can see which cylinder is misfiring while the engine is running. Otherwise you can try some other simple misfiring diagnostic techniques.

Its been a while since i've done this, but try disconnecting/pulling spark plugs individually. If you see the engine get rough when you pull a sparkplug you know that cylinder was contributing. While if you pull a plug and the engine runs the same, then that might be the cylinder thats misfiring.

I'm not quite sure if you have a misfiring or timing problem though. Do you happen to have the "freeze frame" data from when the company pulled the codes from your car?

i've tried pulling all the coils one at a time and it got rough for each one so that doesn't help. The guy only gave me the codes that he pulled and nothing else. do you think it can be related to the camshaft sensor malfunction?

yes the random misfire code is related to the cam pos sensor malfuntion.

check the connector to your cam sensor and if it's ok then replace the sensor.

The P0340 seems to be your real problem here. The cam sensor can cause the random misfire, there may very well be nothing wrong with your ignition or fuel system at all. A misfire has the potential to damage the cat, or may be the reason for the cat not running as efficiently as it should.

There should be a big foot note with a huge red flag. The foot note would read:

For ALL P0340 DTC codes on a 96-04 MY Mustang always have the alternator checked for correct output and excessive AC ripple. A bad alternator diode will mess up the cam signal and confuse the PCM. This causes a false P0340 DTC.

Almost all autoparts stores will do it for free.

Master Card:
cost to check the alternator:free
not having to post that replacing the cam sensor didn't fix the problem: priceless.

Yes I know this is an old thread. However, it still seems worth repeating as ppl still replace the cam sensor first for a P0340 DTC.

sorry i didn't get back to this. i had taken the car to a couple shops and they came up with nothing, so i did my own research and it pointed to the alt like wmburns said. i went ahead and had it tested and it turns out there was a bad diode in the regulator. a new alt fixed the problem
