My 289 is coming together slowly. The block has been stripped and taken to a machine shop for cleaning, boring/honing, and all the goodies. I got my set of KB281 pistons that, with some AFR165 (58cc combustion chamber) heads will bring the comp. ratio up to a very agreeable ~9.6:1. The stock rods are being shot-peened for some extra assurance on top of the ARP rod bolts and main studs.
The cam will be a Comp Cams 282s, and I'll grab an Edelbrock Air-Gap intake because it looks and performs pretty kickass from what I've read. Delivering the fuel will likely be a Holley 650 or equivelant. I'm still up in the air on the type of carb, because there are so many pros & cons to each brand and design.
Backed with a stout T-5 and a newly acquired 9-inch rear w/ some 4.11 gears and a trac-loc differential. I want people to think "solid" when they know about this setup. Solid, meaning that it is a well thought out and well built 289. Parts matching, good HP and torque for the relatively smaller size of the engine. I want this to be a 289 that people say "wow, that's a bit surprising for a 289".
I'm proud of my 289. I know there is no replacement for displacement, and I'm not trying to prove otherwise. But with a good plan and a place like this to come to for advice, you can't go wrong no matter what size V8 you've got. When this engine is complete, let alone the whole car, I will have many of you to thank. And I hope I can help any of you out with whatever knowledge I gain from this project. All in all, none of what has happened so far would have been possible without the help from the Stangnet forums.
