Would 185s on a 302 bog the engine down too much or would it work well ?

That's one of the things I really like about the article(s) from MM&FF... it describes the engine combo and why the heads work with that particular setup. It is a long read, but very detailed; exlained things I didn't understand before.

Since your short block is refreshed:

AFR165's (used around $1000......I picked up my 185's for $900)
Edelbrock RPM Air Gap or Weiand Stealth (I got my used Vic. Jr for $100)
Custom solid flat tappet cam and lifters(~$230-250)
Good 1.6 roller rockers(~$200)
Hooker Comp headers(mine were $110 new on ebay)
650 Demon(I got a used 750 Mighty Demon for $300 so a 650 dp or vacuum could be had for cheaper)

That is 2 grand that will make a world of difference in your car!

I just noticed you didn't mention gears in your sig. If they are stock 2.79's then they HAVE to be changed. I'd go with at least a 3.80 for your 289. Substitute the carb swap for gears and you will still be close to 2 grand IF you can be frugal and find used and good deal parts.

Good luck!

Your tranny will have a big impact on RWHP figures. I do not see it in your sig or in this discussion. When talking about engine components it is better to talk about FWHP. RWHP has a lot to do with transmission and rearend. Expected ETs have so many variables it is silly.

I think a non-roller 5.0 with 165s and a decent intake/carb/cam should net you a reliable and smooth 300FWHP without issue.

I've got 900 or 1000 bux right now if I could find a used set of 185s. I havn't been able to find any used AFR stuff at that price here in LA but maybe I'm not looking in the right places. Where did you get yours ?

I got my 185's on ebay a few years ago.

A year before that I bought a set of Twisted Wedge heads with upgraded springs that came with a set of 1.6 aluminum roller rockers for $800. Deals can be had there if you don't get into a bidding war.

BTW....Twisted Wedge heads are awesome sbf heads as well but you have to be more careful with cam selection due to the rotated valve location.
