Ok its not my mustang but my gf car,she has a civic with the check engine light on and we had it pluged in and two people said it was the cat. well needless to say the cat alone is 700 so we put it on hold. The other day I put 93 in it on accedient and after about half the tank the light went off does this make sense? the light was on atleast 2 months prior to this and never shut off.

Did you actually check the codes? What did the code say? Cats rarely go bad so I doubt it was the cause. Most likely it's an 02 but first you gotta tell us what year and model civic this is and what the code was when you ran it?

Sorry its a 97 ex 120000 miles on it, my freind is a mechanic im not sure what code it was I personaly didnt see it. But my girlfreind has a freind that said the same thing that cats dont go bad and he didnt belive it either so it pluged it in and sure enough it was the same code. he kept saying that cats dont go bad that she needs a new motor and theres no reason it should go bad unless the motor was junk.

Ill also second the 02 sensor. My cavalier used to shoot the same codes. There should be a pre convertor sensor and a post change em both.

WIthout knowing the code it's hard to say. Can't you ask them what the code number was or what the description was?


The motor is junk? Now that's a stretch. How does it run?

it was code 420 I think or 120 it runs good I mean its a 4 banger so it seems slugish but Im used to my f350 with a v10 and my mustang

Catalytic Efficiency below threshold Bank #1

"There are several causes of the P0420 error. The most common, and most
likely in your case, is simply a failing cat. Some models (not yours) had
problems with poor connections at the igniter, which the ECM misrecognized
as a failing cat. An exhaust leak after the primary O2 sensor is another
possible cause, as is a cracked exhaust manifold.

Honda has a TSB for your car for this specific problem (03-073). The
speicifed cure is cat replacement."


Check for exhaust leaks first, and then check the 02. Last ditch effort is a new cat unfortunately.

Because the o2 is in the cat I beleive.

Has it come back? If not don't worry about it have a beer

it has come back just filled up with regular and about half the tank the light went back on. there is an 02 sensor right before the cat im not sure where the second one is.

Do you have any exhaust leaks after the first o2 sensor?

Weird that it comes back with 87 but not with 93. What do those engines take for octane? 87?

Check the price of an o2 and if it's cheap change it.

No theres no leak shes had it for 3 years and always put in 87 could it be just by chance?
