accelerator pedal modification

has anyone done the modification to the accelerator pedal under the dash to take the slack out of the cable. i heard that putting some spacers in between the cable end and the pedal assembly will take out that slack. my pedal has a mile of play so i need to do something about it.

I did. I just tightened a bunch of zip ties around the cable, then cut off the excess. Much easier than taking the cable off or whatever. Felt like I gained 50hp. Do it, if for no other reason than the stinking thing flops around otherwise, lol.

yeah that pedal is definetly flopping in the breeze. so instead of disconnecting the cable from under the dash u just put a bunch of zip ties where, between the end of the cable and the pedal. i have no shortage of zip ties so i'll probably try that. i read somewhere that somebody used a nylon spacer and then some hose clamps to hold it there.

Yea, I just pulled the pedal tight, then put the zip ties around the part of the cable where the spacer goes. It's been a year and a half, so I don't remember exactly what that looks like, lol.

I got a nylon spacer from homedepot and cut a small slit in it for the cable to slide through and then i put tape over it so that the cable couldnt come back out.

Then i switched to the fox body TB setup with the fox body throttle cable and the end of the cable by the pedal was tiny compared to our cable so that same nylon spacer wouldnt work. I just got some small zip ties, did the trick mentioned above and it worked like a charm.

I love it cause the clutch,brake, and gas pedal are all just about level.

thanks for the info fellas, i'm gonna go try it now with the zip ties. i'll let u guys know how it went.

i found 4 nylon spacers in my garage so i used a hacksaw to cut a slit in each one and i pushed the cable through each one and then i used a zip tie to take up the last bit of slack. worked perfect, i used a couple of 1/4 inch extensions to prop up the pedal and i put the spacers in. now all the pedals are aligned perfect. this is one free modification that every mustang owner should do.

I agree. I wonder now if my throttle body blade was actually opening all the way before I did this, as I had LOTS of slack in the cable.

i tried this and i actually did not like it. it was really uncomfortable because my leg wasn't stretched out as it used to be, and i was also afraid of busting the throttle cable since i didn't have a stop. i say if you're comfortable and like the mod, awesome, but at least find out w/ wot is and put a stop so you don't wind up busting the throttle cable... that would suck.

He has a valid point. The site that I originally read this on said there was a risk of stretching or breaking the throttle cable. Oh and Shawn, I doubt your TB wasn't opened all the way before, mine was before I did the mod.

i haven't driven the car yet so i am not sure if i am gonna like how it feels. did u ever try moving the seat back to stretch out a little more? did u actually break the throtttle cable? this pedal doesn't have a stop to begin with so why would u need one now? all this mod is doing is taking the slack out of the pedal, which is like a foot. i cant see anybody spending that much time at wot to actually have that be a factor.

I used a sinker I found in the fishing stuff at wal mart. Get the small round ones that clamp onto the string/cable. Works perfectly!

i can't move the seat back because unlike w/ the throttle pedal (which i don't have to mash), the clutch cable is too hard to press the further back i sit.

no, i did not actually break the throttle cable, but think about it... w/ the stock setting, what stops it is the floor, which is why you don't need a stop. if you don't have a stop, what's to say that in the heat of the moment when your adrenaline is pumping and you're excited about a race, or whatever, that you're going to unconciously mash the pedal beyond wot, thus busting/stretching the cable.

again, my suggestion is if you like the mod, great, but you should DEFINATELY consider some sort of stop to prevent stretching/busting of the throttle cable.

actually what stops the gas pedal is the stop bolt on the side of the throttle body

before doing the mod, have someone open the throttle from the engine bay all the way till it hits the stop and get down an look closely at the gas pedal...it won't be touching the floor....it'll be close, but take a good look under it.

well i drove the car last night after doing the mod and it feels awesome, alot more responsive.
