Adding a hood scoop, and am afraid of water

I am in the process of putting a hood scoop on my 66' mustang coupe. Of course i want to make it functional, wich means cutting a hole in the hood. But, with the scoop open to the world, anything can come in, water, birds, dirt, ect. Does anyone have a suggestion so that i can stop (mostly water) from entering and messing up my engine. Any help would be appreciated.

I wondered about this also. I have added a fiberglass hood with the nasa scoops to my 73 and would like to open up my scoops as well. Do you guys know how the origanal ram air stangs keep water out?

ok heres what i did.. summit and jegs sell scoop plugs.. I use that when it rains or if I go away on long trips because my aircleaner sits inside the scoop. the scoop is fully functional..
I have the boss 429 scoop on my 66 I had to buy the biggest plug they had and trim it to fit.. my guess is you will have to do the same..

on my car, i cut a rectangular hold in the hood that lets in air between the aircleaner and the export brace. The whole is about 6in wide, and 4 or so inches in length. It lets in the air, but directs water behind the engine.

well edbert some of us dont have the luxury of a second car.. I drive my black vinyled interior mustang with no a/c everyday in phx..

Rain.. is fun.. its not really driving in it.. its more like hydro-driving..

Depending on how you set up your scoop. I beleive the cleanest method is to have your base (think normal closed Ford aircleaner housing) that seals to the hood. Inside that you have a smaller air filter with a lid that fits over the top. This way the filter and carb have a 'roof' that prevents dirt, dust, animals and water from falling in while still keeping a functional hood scoop. To alleviate water, put a level on the base and see where it leans, then put a small hole (and hose if you want) to lead out and drain. If it doesn't lean, tap a small channel leading to a hole.

Don't fret the small stuff...the water will faporize at driving temperatures and you wont feel a thing, nor will ever have engine damage.

Now...if your driving in a hurricane, that would be a different story!

The alternate is to use cowl induction...rotate the scoop where the opening is to the rear of the hood.

If your going to have Ram air, enclosed carb.
Then a drain hold should be used in the lower housing.
Stocker's use a tube drain in the back down the bellhousing.

Open hole type should consider water hitting other eng acc.

i really dont think that THAT much water is going to be pouring in through your scoop to hurt your engine at all. Your engine would be so hot, that it would literally boil the water. You could get an enclosed air cleaner and put it on when it rains, then you really wouldnt have to worry.

I am assuming you are molding a fiberglass scoop onto a steel hood...heh, good luck.

na, i am actually conidering a bolt on style hood off of up22.com i have the scoop, painted and all ready to go on. I am just waiting for the guy so he can help me put it on. I dont want to make it crooked or anything lol

on a street car, ram air doesnt actually add much horsepower

the cold air, that goes through a scoop, now thats a different story
and cowl is less likely to get water and will feed probably more cold air under your hood

get a K&N filter (more resistant to water; recommended for boats), use a regular/chrome lid to cover the top and try to cut the whole straight over or slightly behind the filter

i plan to enlarge the hole this weekend;
mainly because i just put a spacer under my aircleaner (last sunday) because it wasnt sitting properly (the drop base was hitting the eletric choke mechanism - so it might have been letting dirty air come underneath one side)
*and also because i have much more room to add cold air
so now with my torker 289 intake, carb spacer, and breather spacer; i have absolutely NO room under my hood (this is another reason)
i had it like that for 2 years (no breather spacer)
*i bought a completly new (used) hood to cut a whole in, my original is in the my dads shop - hence the different color paint... the sun is very problematic
hell, you dont even want to see the peeling on my roof and trunk

yes i have a big arse oil leak from my intake above 3000 rpms or so

my parents 73 mach one has the holes in the naca hood...
and there are no problems from water, the holes are not even near the carbeurator -- unless your wanting a ram air setup

Thanks for the great info Jon. Do u get any water coming in through that hole? ANd approximately how big is the scoop in front, in inches. The scoop that I will be putting on will be 3.5 inches tall and 12 to 15 inches wide, so i am worried a good amount of water can come through it and into my engine compartment. Just keep me posted with any other great info u have.

the scoop is a 69-70 mach 1 scoop

the whole is lined with 3/8' fuel line
but i have no idea how much water, if any, comes through
ive never had any problems though

but your whole will probably be much wider than mine

the plug mentioned before is a great idea

alright, i will put the hose on the inner side of the hole, and you are right, there will probably be a little more water coming into mine, but i still dont think it will be enough to mess things up, plus i have the plug mentioned above, i just need to trim it to the right size to fit the scoop.
