Trying to solve my running rich problem, and have a couple questions.

Besides an adjustable regulator and a gauge, what else am I going to need? Does anyone know of some good online articles for the install, or does the regulator come with any instructions?

Also, who makes high quality regulators and gauges? Looking for some recommendations and personal experiences...

IMO, it's a pretty simple install. I've had experience with BBK's and Aeromotive's AFPR. I think the BBK regulator is a piece of crap and the reason behind my thinking so is because I bought one brand new and didn't have it installed a month and the plunger inside broke. Therefore no sooner would I get it adjusted after screwing with it for 20 minutes, a week later it would be off 3 to 5psi.

Make sure you get an accurate gauge for monitoring fuel pressure. I've seen some cheap gauges be off by 2psi.

The Aeromotive product is very accurate and comes in a pretty red color.

Kirban prob makes the best AFPR, thats the one I run never had any issues w/ it.

I run an Aeromotive on my car and have always had good luck with it.

Well I had a BBK AFPR on my car for a couple days. It came set so rich the car wouldn't idle long enough (among other reasons, not blaming just the afpr) for me to set it. I'm sure it's a fine piece as plenty of guys use it. I also have an Autometer (BEST company for gauges IMHO) pro-comp liquid filled fel pressure gauge that im gonna mount on my cowl coming in tomorrow. That's it. As far as instructions, the afpr and gauge should both come with them. They're real simple. It might be easier to take off the upper intake to get to the fpr. Or you can just undo the back passenger side fuel rail bolt that holds the fuel rail to the lower plenum to pull it away from the intake for clearance. I tried it like that, it worked pretty good. Although it's really easier just to pull the upper intake. I can have my upper off in under 10 minutes now. As for the gauge, you can either mount it on your schrader valve, or the AFPR. My BBK came with a port that you can run a line for a fuel pressure gauge, and a plug if you don't wanna mount it there. I'm gonna mount mine on my schrader valve simply because I have a 36" braided line that is coming with my gauge, and it would be too long to mount it on the AFPR.

BBK was my first FPR and I bought it 5 years ago. I just bought an Aero the other day just b/c I'm changing color schemes but I never had one single problem from mine. I was going to put it on one of my extra motors here but if you want it I'll let it go for $50 shipped.

Thanks for all of the help guys, one more question:

The instructions from Aeromotive say: "If the schrader valve was utilized to check fuel system pressure, remove the fuel pressure gauge and replace the cover on the schrader valve."

So this means the gauge can not be left on the schrader valve after setting the fuel pressure. BUT if the gauge was installed onto the 1/8 NPT port on the regulator, it can be left connected? Why is this?

That's misinformation. There will be no problem leaving the pressure gauge on the Schrader valve. Just make sure you wrap the threads with something like plumbers tape to ensure no leaks develop later on.

So what makes more sense? Gauge on the schrader valve, or gauge on the regulator?

Thoughts?

Well typically if you're going to run a gauge to the regulator itself, it means you'll have a fixed mechanical pressure gauge outside the car. I'd say unless you're running a poweradder, just go with one that threads on the Schrader valve and periodically check it.

..plus you'll be saving yourself some money. Just my .02.

I just bought a BBK afpr because i heard/read really good things about them. I actually have a couple of guys telling me not to get the aeromotive piece because both of theirs crapped out within a couple of months to sum things up there is good and bad ones on all makes. Just cross your fingers. The install is really really easy. Make sure you check the website below because it has tips i never knew were so important with installation of these parts.
