Has anyone ever put a set of 185,s on a 302. I have an E-cam and I am wanting to buy these heads but I was told they will not work because of my cam. The reason I want 185's is because I am going to build a 351 eventually, and I do not want to have to buy another set of heads, I was told to buy the 165's. What do you guys think.. let me know...

I think you're going to run into piston to valve clearance problems with the 185s. You may want to check to see how expensive it'll be to have your pistons fly-cut. It might be worth the expense if it keeps you from having to buy heads twice.

You will be able to run the 185s with 1.6 rockers and the ecam. Just not much more.

Blanket statement warning:

Always clay it up and measure. The word "will" should be changed to "should".

Agreed

Check the clearance and cut as needed.

185's are killer on a 302, If you're planning on spinning it to 8000RPM. Just get the 165's

won't work. on my old set up I had 185's, B303cam, and 1.7 rockers. I bent every single intake valve on the initial fire up. Don't get me worng I checked p/v clearances and they were real tight. I asked a local machinist to check it out and he said it was okay. well I fired the motor up and immediately I could hear the valves slapping the pistons doh!.

To the inexperienced people saying the 185's won't make torque down low on a 5.0, read this thread and LEARN

To be honest the 185's will be to small on any healthy 351W based motor....save your money.

the guy who tuned my car said that he has put 185's on stock bottom 302's on 3 different engines. Nothing bigger than an E-cam and 1.6 rocckers will clear is what he said. He said that he checked clearances, and he wouldnt want it any closer. The engines that they went on were boosted and the heads were a great choice for the application. I dont know if i would want to take the gamble though.

You might want to read buddy rawls statements in that thread...

I'm pretty confident he knows a bit more of what is going on...and it seems to contradict what you are saying""

Learn away...

On the 185's, the p-v clearance will be pushing it. I would either save your money as Rick said or just get the 165's and be happy...

The 185's (comparing with same cam)...will make less average torque than a 165 head.

Also peak torque doesn't mean much...

Don't change a thing unless you are unhappy with the results. If it was my car, i'd change the cam and gears. You picked a good head. What piston do you have?

I have had 185's fit on a stock piston as wel with a small cam but the PTV is close on thr radius...a littler closer then I like. It leaves very little room for error, if you float the valves they will hit.

The deck height on a stock motor is al over the place, I've had them at 0 and I have had them as deep as .015" in the holes.
