combo

hi, been reading through the thread and i have a 347 myself. i thought i would go with more cubic inches and get some more power, now i wish i would went the 306 route. it can get pretty expensive to build a 347 even if you don't plan on going that crazy. you lose a lot of streetability and with a stroker in my oppinion and generally they work best with higher lift cams and they are a lot happier at the higher rpm range. if you want a good streetable fast car with a very friendly 1500-5500 rpm range stick with the 306 and you will definitely stay in your budget. i've read numerous threads and have highly researched all possible routes (too late for me of course on my current setup). stick with the 306, keep 24lb. injectors, go with the afr 165's they are cheaper, will work better with the 306, and flow almost as good as the 185's anyway and i know you don't want a custom chip but they are so worth it. $300 will give you a chip that you will have the possibility to have multiple tunes with and is a lot easier for any dyno shop to tune if you go that route. with all the extra things you have to change for the stroker ie, maf, bigger injectors, bigger more expensive heads, a different flywheel etc. it isn't worth it unless your drag racing or your not that worried about how streetable your car is, trust me, i wish i could go back to a 302-306 it's so much easier to build a fast daily driver that won't be that bad on gas either.

I really like posts such as this one

Here we have a man who ... HAS DONE IT :Word:

You know ... We all have ideas of what a successful combo is

I do find the last sentence to be interesting to me

it isn't worth it unless your drag racing or your not that worried about how streetable your car is, trust me, i wish i could go back to a 302-306 it's so much easier to build a fast daily driver that won't be that bad on gas either.

I do feel such a combo is a bit much for a ... daily driver ... and your findings
support that line of reasoning

Yes ... such a combo is gonna be a gas hog around town

Yes ... you gotta have supporting stuff that is larger
but
That is just as how it is ... dd application or not

Now ... About the streetability ...........

If you are talking about bucking, surging, bad idle, stalls at stop lights,
and such things, I'd think the tune is not as close as it needs to be

I don't know

But ... As for my way of looking at it

Expecting such a combo to be a great daily driver is wishful thinking

Then again ... I don't expect my daily driver to be a hot rod

Good Post Sir

Thanks for sharing

Grady

306 or 347

thanks for the comment. hope your endeavors go better than mine did. well it's done and i have to move on from there but i just wanted to say make sure you do your research, lots of research and talk to everyone and ask questions and get more than one opinion on everything. ultimately you want something that is going to make you happy not the other guy, so taylor your car to you because it's an extension of you. bye the way my gas mileage in the city is about 8 mpg, maybe 10 on a good day and only about 15 max highway. the worst thing is i didn't research my parts and get good matched components, i kind of threw it together because i was impatient and i was rewarded with less than stellar hp numbers to the tune of only 250rwph and 317tq (mind you with a 347) i can make these better but to be where my engine should be for what i spent ($6-$7 thousand) i would need to completely start over again and that would cost me about another $3g to do it right, ughh. oh well thanks for the compliment just want to see someone do it the right way, not the way i did, and it looks like you're on your way. good choice for heads. definately don't cheap out on the heads, cam or intake because that is what the whole combo comes down too. good luck let us know how it turns out.

Sonic... Thanks for the input... Mines not a DD so that gives me some latitude...I hear you on having decent street manners... I dont want some high rpm motor..I'm trying to stay conservative on my parts so I dont build some I wont like...

Wow...sounds like a horror story... I'm sure your pissed to say the least....

My heads were work over by FTI so he's gonna do my cam for the motor. I been reading myself to get all the info I can...Like you I only wanna do this once. I choose an all forged, balanced and blueprinted 331 with all kinds of good parts in it for my shortblock. I'm gonna run my Tmoss ported GT40 tubular intake....In different shoot-outs the GT40 has nice numbers and is a good match for a 331... i dont wont to have all my power in the upper rpm ...

Do you know if Pete is still in business??? I looked around his site today for chip info and it seems like it hasn't been updated in months... You ever call him about yours??

Finally got the shortblock this weekend.. I ended up buying this 331 from Jesse as he's getting out of the game altogether and gave me a deal I couldnt pass up.
the forged shortblock is stock block with Eagle crank & rods with SRP forged pistons, DSS main girdle, all balanced. at the moment it has an F cam in it. the comp ratio is 8.7 to 1 as it was built for boost. Came with a Canton 7 qt pan, and the balancer & flywheel.
The AFR's I have are 58 cc and been milled so the comp ratio should raise a tad. Its ready for boost which is where I might go in a year or so.

Not alot needs to be done...gonna swap on some different VCs and call it a day.

Anyone who's got any ifo on the F cam N/A would be helpful. from what I'm reading it pretty SN95 computer friendly.. I had plans to go custom but who knows..this one actually sounds workable N/A and alot of people run the F cam for boost.

1 1/2 yrs later and I'm damn near done... hopeful to start this thing Saturday.
ended up spending around 3600.00. all I need is plugs and 2 gallons of anti and she's done.
Was able to drop motor with the LTs on no problem...also bought a CR racing/Visteon radiator and dry ran that and the fan and alls good, got an inch to spare. Canton 7 qt fit around the stock K member no problem, dropped it right on the motor mounts and all cleared thank you....
I sold my motor 2 months ago to force myself to finish this thing....wanna drive before the snow so I got my finger out and did it.
Bought a king cobra from Anderson Ford, its built to his specs and good for 450 ponies with the stock feel. You name it I replaced it...only thing original is the starter, alt is being replaced, have a polished one on the road... I got all new Ford sensors to boot. Figured i do it all now and its done.
Only thing I have to worry about is its manners... we'll see how that goes real soon.

Here she be.... 8.9 comp, all forged, balanced, girdled, SRP pistons, Scat crank, AFR 185s warmed over by FTI with FTI cam, Scorp 1.6s, Eddy RPM, Accu 75, 1 5/8 ceramic LTs, I'm gonna start with 24s aS my MAF is set for them. I have 30s if i dyno and she needs em. With 373s she should pull just fine.. If i get real bored its ready for boost....
