Aftermarket Hood Question

I recently took off my Cobra RR hood and removed the back insert that was on the hood that kept the heat blocked in. It was held in w/ rivets and silicone. What I was wondering is does this in anyway effect the structural integrity of the hood? The reason I'm asking b/c I'm not sure if its just in my head or not but its almost like I can see the hood "flex" while driving. Of coarse the thought of some air pocket now being formed under the hood and causing it to fly up and smash my wind shield crossed my mind.

Yes its dusty and needs to be washed. Its on the agenda friday.

I honestly could not tell you the answer to this. I can see it having some role in holding everything together, but not in the right areas.

What you are seeing is simply cowl shake now that the air is able to flow in that way, but...so long as your hood latch is in strong condition, and the hood is reinforced in the latch area, you shouldn't have any problems.

Do you run hood pins?

no hood pins and the hood latch is pretty strong. I pulled up on the hood one day as hard as I dared to and no sign of it wanting to come up at all but I was not sure how it would react while driving. It may have always had that shake or flex to it and I never noticed it. Just want to be sure I didnt do a big no no. I was going to drill holes in the panel that I took out but I could not get a hole saw to fit in there b/c of the angle so I said screw it and took the whole thing off. I will admit its pretty cool to be doing down the road and drop some weight on the gas pedal and be able to see the intake torque to the side

Get some pins on that hood and dont ever worry about it. Without them there is always a chance of it coming up period the end. I dont care who makes the hood or how strong you may think its latched. No need to even take that chance unless you are looking to buy a new hood and paint job one day.

I didn't want to put hood pins in it before but it probably would look pertty sweet. The cable style ones anyway. I always figured didn't come up before then it was not going to with as many pass's as Ive made at the track with it. Just looking to see if taking out that back plate effects anything at all or not other then letting out the under hood heat.

Read my targa thread man!! I was on a freaking test drive with the new owner-to-be and my hood of 3 1/2 yrs came up on me!

Same story, always latched hard, never an issue.....NEVER AGAIN. Pin that sucker.

i just don't trust an aftermarket hood without pins in it. its so easy for that latch to fail and now you have a direct path for air to get under it.

get those pins!

as far as structural integrity, you just took off a bunch of material off the back, of course its going to shake more. i wouldn't worry about once you get the pins on, but as it is now i'd be worried.

Travis I know how your thinking ..youve made tons of passes with no problems and you think things are fine. trust me I do understand that but the fact of the matter is you still run the chance of that hood coming up at any time without it being pinned. You have been around the boards long enough to know that it happens over and over again. Have you ever wondered why the manufactures recommend pining their hood?????? dont even hesitate put the pins in and be done with it.

The problem I have with those locks is that they don't look very strong. If you pair them with the stock hood latch, then they may be fine as a supplemental reinforcement.

I'm particularly fond of the Aerocatch locks, myself: AeroCatch

The Aerocatch ones, I've seen before, and look great! Plus you wouldn't have pins sticking out of your hood....just latches

I'll take a look at some of these links, and those video's were freaky....just couldn't imagine having that happen

I was just out in the garage looking at mine trying to find a good spot to mount them along the radiator support where it would not interfere with the rise's in my hood due to the RR hood. If anyone has any pics of them mounted on an RR hood post them here, Ive been looking but have not really found anything with them on the RR hood yet.

I did the same thing a few years back...Yours looks like it has an insert in there...that should be the stiffener right there. Mines an H.O.Fiber and yours looks more rugged in that area.
Mine flutters some...paint shows no signs of cracking so it cant be moving all that much... Lotta heat pumps outta there... in the Fall it fogs the window.

I had seen a pic a while back were a guy had mounted 1 hood pin on the underside of his hood, so that there was nothing protruding through the hood. I don't care for the look of hood pins so I think I am going to attempt to do something similar when I do my pins.

Yeah I was wondering about the fogging in the cooler temps. I'll deal w/ that when the time comes. I'll give you a call tomorrow after I get out of work about saturday.
