ok well I have tuned the car (new plugs and wires timing to 10*), I am running 92 octane gas, I have cleaned my K&N twice second time being 100% sure not to use too much oil, and cleaned the maf twice. Each time I cleaned the maf and the air filter my pining problem would cease for a couple of days then it would be right back...last time I cleaned the air filter I did not clean the maf too and the problem went away for almost two weeks, today it is back but very minor, I could barely hear it ping....what do you all suggest?

flush the coolant system, put some new coolant in there....new cap/rotor, make sure your fan is coming on correctly, make sure your T-Stat is functioning properly, clean the filter...drive it around for a little bit and let the extra oil come off THEN clean the MAF...change the fuel filter(could be clogged and causing a lean condition). Stuff like that.

Somebody had a post yesterday or so about the pinging issue being due to the IAT (the internal air temperature) sensor which is in the intake system (little black sensor with a orange dongle). That is right around the air filter and maf so maybe???

Another possibility (although slim due to the cessation of pinging after a tune) could be the distributor itself. You didn't say how many miles are on the car, but it's entirely possible that the bushings in the distributor are worn out and causing the timing to drift.

However, before dropping the plastic on a shiny new MSD, I'd do as donjohn suggested and clean the IAC (and MAF again). While you're at it, pull the TB and clean it out with a decent amount of electrical cleaner. Also, I'd clean the K&N one more time but DON'T use any oil this time. Clean it, dry it, reinstall it.

Now, pull the ground cable off the battery, open the driver's door, and walk away for 15-20 minutes. Reinstall the cable and take it for a drive. Monitor the pinging.

If it comes down to it, back the timing down some more. For what it's worth, I'm running a whopping 6* of timing and have to run 93 octane to keep it from pinging.

and I am new to the mechanical world especially when it comes to domestics...so this may sound dumb but where is the t-stat and how do I identify it?

ahh one more thing...the temperature gauge reads really low, when it is fully warmed up the needle is just before the N.

A few of us have noticed that the balancer starts to come apart @ 80K miles. Check to see if you can see a thin piece of rubber coming out of the balancer about 1/2" in from the outter circumference. If so, then you timing could be off. Just a thought
